What else would you expect when inflation is creeping into double digits and rents were made optional for over two years?

I've shared here that my rent will be up to $2150 a month for a 1 bedroom with shared ($5 a load) laundry and outdoor parking in Marlborough. When I moved in 4 years ago, it was $1500 a month. Thank G-d I've had a few promotions, but this year my merit raise won't even cover my rent increase.

10 years ago, my 3 bedroom apartment in Waltham was $1800. It had 1.5 bathrooms, huge bedrooms, 2 living rooms, and a big kitchen. It's up for rent for Sept. 1 for $4000 a month.

Every day, I send out a few applications for jobs out of state. Unfortunately, the COL is up everywhere and the paycuts to move to cheaper areas don't make the math work.

Cheaper areas don't always mean lower pay. Employers seem to be clinging to hybrid to maintain staff.

If you had to live in the burbs like Malden and Arlington, you might as well have been living back at home with your parents.
You also need to consider many high paying jobs are not in the city nowadays, but in places like Burlington, Woburn, Waltham and so on. Living in the city is actually inconvenient for them.

This is just nuts. These rents are now well past what my mortgage is. I don't know how this is sustainable.

It will continue as long as people are stupid enough to pay them.

It's a shame that some people live under a proverbial rock... on a private beach.

My rent was increased by 500$ for the 3bd apartment in one of the Avalons in Lex/Belm area. Coming from the midwest where a 100$ increase would make me upset,,, this was one of the "Welcome to Boston" kind of moments.
