Hello! I have a full time job working from home and would like to move to the Boston area sometime within the next year or 2 but wanted to do a lot of research first! I'm 22 and would be moving by myself so I want to be sure that I would be in a safe area. I also would be looking for a 1-bedroom under $1000. I know that doesn't leave me pretty much any options right in Boston, haha. I don't mind being up to a 45-minute trip from Boston. I just have no idea where to look for my price range that could be sort of close to Boston but still safe. I don't want to live in a studio since I'll be working from home. I might go mad being in one room for work and sleep and hanging out!! I have a friend in Wellesley and a friend south of Boston. I don't live in a huge town at present so I'm just really concerned about finding a safe area since I'll be living alone. Any help would be amazing.

Thank you so much!!

A little more info would help narrow the possibilities:

What kind of character are you looking for in your immediate area? Would you prefer to have as much of a city environment as you can find in your price range, or are you looking for something more suburban?

Will you have a car? Would you prefer access to public transit, or does that matter?

When you say "safe," do you mean really, really super-safe, or would you be okay living in more or less an urban setting that would be safe by urban standards?

The commuter rail can work but keep in mind it's largely one way. It's not a subway system where you can backtrack if you make a mistake. If you want to get out and around you'll probably have to get a car eventually.

Off the top of my head, and not knowing much about you, I'd say Salem. It's a fun little city with lots of people in your age range. It's safe, on the commuter rail, and you could probably find a 1 br for $1,000. My second suggestion would be Beverly. Next to Salem, on the commuter rail and also in your price range.

I live in Beverly and recommend it. I also think it is nicer than Salem to live. Salem is nice to visit; I go there for Halloween and I plan on riding the rickshaws sometime.

You should really have a car here; I lived here without a car for a couple of years. It can be done, but having a car makes things much easier.
