I discovered this thread and found it interesting and amusing. I spent the entire summer of 1968 on Lanai picking pineapples for Dole. Now that the 'pines' are gone, I would think things have changed but it sounds like they haven't changed as much as I might have guessed.

I can tell you when I'm going back to Lanai.........NEVER!!!

I'm a Lanaian. Lived on Maui for 12 years, got road rage and moved back home. Lanai has a dentist. You need only to catch a ferry (residents reap the the rewards of paying cheaper fares) to Lahaina and other dentists or specialists are within walking distance of the dock. Having good medical insurance makes it easy. Finding a job is hard (yet there are so many with here with two jobs). Start your own business, if you're creative you'll think of something, many others have. See a Lanai realtor for rentals or go to one of four grocery stores or some of the restaurants and you are sure to find a posting or ask around... The locals are likely to give you a name(s) and maybe even a phone number or two if you ask nicely. Because we are so isolated our children are technically literate. Ha... gotta ask my grand kids for help all the time and they're elementary age. Four Seasons Lodge @ Hotel was just rated as as one of the 10 best hotels in the US. Gas is under $6/g. Food is expensive (limited selection) so I shop w/ coupons and look for sale items and yes internet shopping is popular with the residents. If you have a child(ren) a car would come in handy or ask a friend or neighbor for help. But then the town is so small you can walk to the store a few times a day to get what you need or want. There are no stop lights or franchises on the island no night life unless you're the outdoor/stay-at-home/hangout-with family and friends type. There's free entertainment (jazz festivals, ukulele festivals, world class musicians performances and more...) through the hotels and some of the local establishments but not much night life, not much places to spend so you can actually save $. Then again I guess that's why so many of us can afford to go to Vegas once or twice a year. Most of my siblings (I have many) have moved to a neighbor island or to the mainland but some are planning to move back upon retirement. There are million dollar homes and little plantation homes... rich and poor but we get along just fine. Be humble, get to know the us, enjoy the isolation and beauty. For me... No road rage

Are there rentals available on Lanai or just the expensive hotels?

I stayed at a friends place on Lanai and he rents it out. So yes, some rentals. Hotel Lanai is also pretty reasonable.

Wow. Another really positive posting! Lots of aloha here! Very impressed (not). The "guy" who owns most of Lanai is Larry Ellison (as in Oracle Larry Ellison) and he is investing quite a bit (even though his exentric personality does not allow him all the time to make the best choices, at least in my optinion, but I'm certain he'd beg to differ and that would probably make a very interesting argument too) in improvements. And all the people whom I have met on Lanai were very pleasant and friendly (but some here might then claim again, that they are only friendly as long as you keep on giving them money). And quite honestly, just because some people come from some place where things are different, does not make them tick that way too (maybe there are reasons beyond money why they left....). Like I don't see all the Americans living here where we currently live as backwards and morons, even though they come from a country where they have what I consider "jurassic banking", bad public schools for the most part and the death penalty... And no, not all Germans hate Jews either... !!??? Ah yes, and Scandinavians are not nymphomaniacs by nature ;-)

Consider the source.

The simplest, easiest thing to check is the posters basic statistics, in the upper right corner of their post... how long they've been a member, how many posts they have made, and how many reputation points they have. The last reflects the number of times other viewers have found their posts useful or funny or otherwise commendable in some way, and awarded them rep points (using the Scale icon). It doesn't mean a lot all by itself, but the ratio between the number of posts they have made and the number of rep points they have earned is at least an indication of how others regard their posts. Every new member starts with 10 points, so one of the first tip offs regular members here have that someone is a "troll," or a person who just wants to stir up trouble, is that they post nasty stuff and have a small reputation.

Another thing that helps, when evaluating how credible a new poster is, is to click on their name at the top left of the post, which opens a drop down menu with the option to Find All Posts By Member. Often just quickly scanning that list tells you something about the person, and opening a few of their posts will give you a better sense of who they are.

And finally, if they post information that is obviously biased or easily disproven, it's a good clue they don't have anything of value to share.

When someone has only 6 posts, with no rep points, and what they post is inflammatory and has a hostile or racist tone, and is clearly wrong on a major fact, like the demographics of a place, and the post also is one of several they've posted to mention crystal meth or food stamps - just to make up a completely random example - then you can pretty safely ignore whatever they have to say.

OpenD, if there is one word I posted that is not true, please feel free to point it out.

Just because you don't like hearing what someone else has to say, doesn't mean that it's time for you to pull out the knee-jerk accusations of racism. Especially if you don't live here. I have friends of many races, and nobody who has lived on Lanai for any length of time could honestly disagree with what I posted.

Open D: believe me, I did look into the guys profile and saw exactly what you mentioned. But I just could not help it to comment it ;-). Must have had an effect, he pulled the post... Maybe he's gone alltogether. And now we can continue to hear in a more objective way as to why or why not to move to Lanai. I must say lanaians comment of the road rage on Maui made me laugh! :-).
