somebody who doesn't have to go to a messageboard to complain about a bum

to the OP.. more neighborhoods closer to downtown? There is the coconut grove area, or just outside of downtown. Personally I think the South Miami area would be better. From there is literally just 10 minutes down the main street to downtown.

I hope that you are getting paid in Euros or something other than the fast depriciating dollar. The prices on real estate in south Florida are still way too high, and wages are still falling. The weather is now horrible, and wil remain so until November. The local governments are so corrupt, that it makes Latin America look honest. Your quality of life will suffer in Miami, and the real disaster is coming in the next few years. The hurricane will devastate the area and bankrupt the dysfunctional insurance fund of Florida. Recession pressures are already increasing crime, so you better not look rich.

In summary "where to move in Miami"? Go north till you see a sign that says "leaving Miami-Dade county" and step on the gas. You may find a good area to live in 1-2 hours..

You can also try Coral Way and The Roads, both are nice areas, close to everything and very affordable.

It is always nice to read how horrible miami is right before I go out to go rollerblading and grab a drink on the best beach in the US surrounded by beautiful women and palm trees. Even better to know that the rest of the US is in their winter coats :P

That's a gross exaggeration even for you. You've said before that you would consider living in Brickell, Pinecrest, or Palmetto Bay if you could afford it (which on a side note doesn't make much sense because you own a home in Key Largo that could be sold to buy something decent in all of those areas). The nice areas of Miami-Dade (of which there are quite a few) are far nicer than 90% of the suburban sprawl extending through Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, and Saint Lucie counties.

If you want to spend $1800 on a three-bedroom house/condo/townhome that is in a good school attendance zone, I would recommend the following areas:

Kendall
South Miami
Palmetto Bay
Aventura
Doral
