I come from a Swedish/Danish family (mostly). Crepes are kind of a staple.I usually order Crepes but I prefer fluffy pancakes. However if they are not fluffy and made just right, then I would rather just have crepes. Most places' pancakes are disappointing, so I avoid disappointment by ordering boring old crepes. Crepes are pretty much good everywhere.

My favorites were:

Caper's Steakhouse (Gratiot north of 7 Mile on Detroit's east side). Best Catfish dinner ever, with exception to Pappadeaux.

Green Lantern. I preferred their round pizza. The best part is everything (including the dough) was made fresh, which is rare to find these days.

Pizzapapalis. I love Chicago-style pizza, and they serve a damn good one.

Tie between House of Reuben and Louie's Ham & Corned Beef. It's hell trying to find a place down here that sells just a plain Corned Beef on Rye (*NOT* a Reuben), especially one that gives you such gigantic portions like Louie's or HOR.

Can't think of a 5th one unfortunately. I would have said Ram's Horn (for their Paul Bunyon), but my last two visits were dissapointing. The portions have gotten *MUCH* smaller too.

Since this thread has expanded past Detroit proper I will toss out the pizza at Gilbert's Lodge on Harper between 9 and 10 mile in St Clair Shores.
In fairness I'm a guy who thinks there is no such thing as bad pizza, just good, better ,best. But Gilberts does a good pizza.

Yes, I meant to post this in Detroit, but I messed that up somehow and could not move it or delete and repose. Frankly it woudl be good to learn about the greatest places anywhere in Michgian. I was just in Marshall visiting one of our kids for her birthday and it woudl have been nice to know which were the best places there. We went to a good place (Stageecoach Inn), but while there learned the really awesome place was around the corner (Forget the name).

So all of Michigan is just fine.

You think Hungry Howies is good ? (We call it cardboard and catsup pizza - but then we still eat it because it is the most convenient place for us - still I would not call it good).

"Caper's Steakhouse (Gratiot north of 7 Mile on Detroit's east side). Best Catfish dinner ever, with exception to Pappadeaux."

I love Pappadeaux, but I have never been able to convince myself catfish is something you should put in your mouth. Is Capers a good seafood/cajun place generally?

IN truth I may have eaten catfish. I have had both gumbo and some kind of dirty rice or something that had a lot of dead seadweller bits in it.

Caper's is mainly known for its gigantic portions of steaks ("by the ounce") and baked potatoes, especially for the price (very inexpensive).

That said, it was struggle trying to find good cajun food in general around Detroit, especially since all of the old school shrimp houses (Dot & Etta's, O'Quin's, Miley & Miley's, etc.) closed shop during the recession

I don't want to play a game of semantics on the word "good". I'm sure I could come up with several levels of "good"...pretty good, really good, super good, good enough, etc.
But if I'm ordering and eating something repeatedly that falls under "good enough" minimally.

So I might ask why you would keep ordering something that wasn't at least "good enough"?

1. It is the most convenient and least expensive.

2. Kids find it acceptable and even preferable over some kinds of actually edible pizza.

3. In our house you eat what is offered, starve or go buy and make something yourself.

4. Our Kiwanis club sometimes gets it for dinner (again convenient and cheap).

If I had my druthers, I would never get it or eat it again. I do not often get my druthers though.

Anyone ever eat at Marios in mid-town? Beautiful dining room (inside). Expensive ($50 per entree for Italian is uber pricey IMO). However they have Cannelloni!

Change in my list:

I have to add Prime and Proper. Crazy expensive. Impeccable service and amazing steaks. Really worth the cost, but it is a save all year kind of place. (figure on $150 per person with wine).

Catfish is a bottom-feeding fish for sure, but it is extremely tasty and delicious when fried. It is a very popular staple of southern cooking and African-American cuisine.

You will not find catfish in jumbo or jambalaya, or any other soups for that matter, because the flaky texture of fish will break down in a soup, plus they would overpower a soup. I would suggest you give it a try one day. There are many "YOU BUY, WE FRY" places in the city to try it.
