Selden Standard - Ravioli Things and lamb sausage things.

Chop House. Aged Rib Eye

( Cafe Roma would have been on the list )
I really like El Barzon in SW Detroit. The place has separate Mexican and Italian food menus (not fusion). The Mexican food is outstanding (get anything with their mole sauce) but the Italian options are the real gems in this place.

Yes. Old school Italian with Tuxedo-wearing waiters. A special occasion place for most.

I scrolled through the Prime and Proper website. I truly wish them well but I don't think they are in the right city for those prices day in and day out week after week month after month. I give them a year Max and they are either gone or had to down size (price) their expectations. Those look like NYC prices to me. I hope I'm wrong.

We went there on Monday. We had to wait 20 minutes for a table. On the other hand, they were the only nice place we could find that was open.

They are doing well for now. They have received some national recognition and awards for steak and wine. They are expensive, but not much more so than London Chop House, The Whitney, Roast, and a few others I do not feel like putting my mind to remembering right now). The thing is P & P has no options that are not crazy expensive. The other killer are the sides. $14 for mediocre asparagus is annoying and really runs up the price. With $100 steaks, they better have reasonable vegetables or just include them, and get someone who has better veggie cooking skills - it is not just about the steak. On the other hand the service was impeccable and no one in our group could remember ever having a better steak at any price.

BTW, the portions are absurdly huge. It makes more sense to by two or three entrees and split them with four people.

At those prices they do need to improve the decor.

I will defer to your knowledge of the detroit restaurant scene as I do not get down there often and those sorts of restaurants are out of my price range. Perhaps my concerns are unfounded but I still would wonder how many high end restaurants Detroit can sustain? More than I imagine?
I would think those prices are way beyond a vast majority of Detroit residents so I guess they are all competing for customers from the suburbs to put enough butts in the seats long term.

Restaurants like that are mostly populated by people using someone else's money, by people enjoying a one time uber fancy meal event (vacation trip, anniversary, or the like) or by the very rich. If they were just used by the very rich who can afford to eat in such places regularly, then saturation would indeed be a problem. However if you look at the numbers of way high end restaurants in many of the more popular cites, we still have a relatively small amount. The other thing that is hard for non-foodies to grasp, its the willingness of foodies rich or not to pay for an occasional meal of superior quality. While I admit to enjoying the way high end experience once in a while, I do not think I would ever choose them just for me, especially if I was going to pay for it.

Yes, our work group would go there for lunch when we were stationed in Detroit. This was back when the $20 Entertainment coupon books would have lunch time discounts for fancy places like Mario's. Eat cheap with your work pals for lunch, then bring your S.O. to Dinner at Mario's when prices were much higher!

For massive sandwiches in the Detroit area, why has no one mentioned the Wheat & Rye, or Mike's Ham Place?

Prime + Proper has been open since November, so I guess it should be closing its doors in 2 months. Never mind the place is packed nightly. And of course this restaurant's target demographic is not the working class that primarily populate the city of Detroit.

Have you noticed the prices of upscale housing in the downtown and surrounding areas? The people who live in these $400,000 condos, and wealthy suburbanites, are primarily the folks patronizing this place

The people paying $4600 a month rent for the penthouse apartments in Broderick tower probably eat there often.

I'm happy to be wrong and have no problem admitting it.
Out of curiosity how many nights a week do you eat there?
