Moving to Mt. Pleasant
Hi I am going to be new to Michigan starting in August 2009 when I move to Mt. Pleasant to start graduate school. To be honest I am very nervous because I haven't heard that much encouraging news about the town of Mt. Pleasant. I am very excited about the program I will be entering though.
I was just wondering if people had any ideas of where to live in Mt. P? I hear it is very hard to find a place to rent since the undergrads take them all. I would prefer to live near the downtown or separate from the undergrad scene. Also, how do I even find a place if they are all taken already?
I am coming from Seattle, so it should be a big shift for me. Any advice on nature activities, sustainability focused activities, community events, restaurants, etc would be appreciated too.
Thanks!

There is plenty of Housing & apartments in Mt.Pleasant
There is lots of things going on there, summer festivals, CMU games, and other stuff. I would go to Mt.pleasant websites and check things out.

There are so many apartments for rent in Mt P right now its redonkulous. We have a developer here (McJerk) who is trying to single-handedly trying to put all of the other landlords out of business. He has built complex after complex and there is a glut of stuff for rent. I think the Morning Sun would be a good online resource to look at for apartments. The older homes toward downtown may be a little rowdy and noisy but lots and lots of new apartments and homes for rent. The key is getting away from the undergrads I think. The drive from anywhere around Mt Pleasant to CMU is easy as pie. Especially coming from Seattle! I drive to my business in Shepherd every day and the commute is just awful. It takes me 12 minutes to go 11 miles. 1 blinker lite and one stop sign. My son drives 1 hour to go 15 miles in Chicago. Go figure? The college is just wonderful. Tons of new buildings and programs. Great relationship with town. Get a load of the new zillion dollar library on campus! Great sports programs. Midland is close by with a decent mall and a brand new baseball stadium. (the LOONS) Moved here from Flint 33 years ago and I love it. Good luck!!

The negativity you've heard about Michigan is probably warranted. The big shift you will experience in going from Seattle to Mt. Pleasant is putting it mildly. Mount Pleasant is in the smack middle of the state and way out in the boonies. It cannot in any way ever be compared to Seattle and the Pacific NW. Compared to Seattle, there is NOTHING there. Its a small town of about maybe 24,000 in the middle of cornfields and natural gas areas. You will have to drive at least 2 hours to get to the Detroit Area to find something to do. My honest opinion is that if you can get accepted into grad school elsewhere near a large city--or in another state--do so. Dont be surprised if you are bored to death there. Mt. Pleasant is not far from northern MI and its lakes and forests. But I doubt whatever ammenities Mt. Pleasant has, it cant compare to seattle. Just a forewarning and my two cents.

I go to school here, AND live here year around. Right now its quite dead because all the students are gone, but yes it is quite boring, and be ready for a long cold winter. We have the University and a Casino...that's about all.

say hello to kid rock for me, eminem lives up 53 a little ways, the michigan state motto which you will see everywhere is 'fish, camp, hunt'. they also have thousands of lakes and are 2nd to only california in golf courses. don't look to do too much skiing unless its on a lake behind a boat, the place is flatland.

There are actually several good places to downhill ski in Michigan. Not large hills, but you can still point them downhill and have fun.

those are not hills, those are grassy knolls. using the word hill is a mis-representation and will confuse non-michiganers.
