I am staying at a family lake house on Lake Colon and I am 18 years old and hold a valid Indiana drivers license, my cousin who owns the place and the jet skiis said it's a new Michigan state law that says I have to hold some sort of boating safety certificate in order to drive motor powered watercraft, until I am 29 years old. Is this true? I figured since i'm 18, which makes me a legal adult, it wouldn't be a problem driving a watercraft by myself.

Is this a real law, because I can't find it anywhere on Internet.

jet ski laws are very strict as there are many serious accidents on them....In MI yes you need to have a boater's safety certificate (got mine when i was 12!)
Michigan Boating License and Boat Safety Course - Who May Legally Operate a Boat or PWC

the DNR is where you would look....for the official website, i find this site easier to read....find out how much his/her lake is patrolled, you can get awaay with it, but if their family follows the law then they are doing the right thing...sorry
it isn't that new either....

Here is the Michigan DNR website page that has this restriction. It is the second "bullet" item. So in reality, your Cousin is wrong in saying you have to be 29 in order to operate a PWC without a boating safety certificate, you actually have to be 30 or over this year in order to do so (30 if your Birthday is between now and Dec 31'st).

DNR - Who Needs to Take Boater Safety?
Persons born after December 31, 1978 shall not operate a personal watercraft unless they obtain a boating safety certificate.

Yeah, us older guys have it made.....we're "grandfathered" in.

Just wish they'd give me a break with the out of state deer hunting license.

Holy Cow!

That's kind of dumb you don't need a certificate if you're born before 1978, isn't it? It's not like this boating knowledge comes with age automatically.
