Could be that the regulations changed because that was obviously a really long time ago, or he said he didn't need them at MEPS either because he lied, or didn't know. Or, he didn't need them, but came to need them while he was serving. I could get get orthodics now, but that doesn't mean I could have joined with them. Also, buying orthodics from the grocery store is way different than having an RX from a podiatrist.

I have very bad flat feet. When I went to MEPS to enlist in the Air Force in 1989, they disqualified me because of that. I had to write to our congressman to get a waiver so I could enlist, which was how I got in.

Flat feet that cause issues with standing, running, cause pain, or restrict footwear is a DQ today. Flat feet without any issues are not a DQ.
