OTOH, they did put up a spanking new 35W bridge, under budget and ahead of schedule - and that's a really fine bridge.

Icy-cold comfort for those most affected by the collapse.

As far as infrastructure...what??? You can't say ANYTHING about "infrastructure" when we had a major interstate bridge collapse, killing 13 people. The US Hwy 52 bridge in St Paul is now considered to be in worse shape than the I-35W bridge was when it fell. Each time I drive 52 (which is not often, thank god), I think about the people who experienced first-hand the collapse, and I try to get over the bridge as quickly as possible. It is not a fun experience.

The infrastructure here is crumbling -- literally in some places.
If you drive in other metro areas around the nation you will understand that our roads are in much better shape and take you where you want to go better than most areas. I personally know a family directly affected by the bridge collapse, lost their father, so I am not in any way discounting that tragedy but infrastructure is more then bridges and roads too.

I've driven in these cities in the past five years: Los Angeles; San Francisco; San Diego; Seattle; Chicago; Milwaukee. Of these, the only city with worse road conditions than ours is Milwaukee.

If money weren't an issue, I certainly wouldn't be living in Minnesota. Why? - WINTER!

I'd live in Minneapolis from May through December and maybe New Orleans, San Francisco, DC from January through April.

Get off the main roads and Chicago's side streets are absolutely attrocious! They wrecked my tires! Chicago has the most streets/sq. mi. though so it's no wonder they don't maintain all of their streets 100%.

It's easy to point out the obvious example, but I think there are more important questions.

Was that bridge an anomaly, or a true example of the overall state of the bridges and roads in Minnesota?

What was the true cause of the bridge collapse? Whose responsibility? Does that entity also have responsibility over some or all of the other bridges in the state?

How does Minnesota, as a whole, rank versus other states in terms of bridge condition? A context is important.

Well, went on a recon of various areas....loved the trees and feel of Minnetonka, Edina has some nice areas with trees but the homes are older and at least the ones I visited were not "updated" versus in Minnetonka the ones I visited albeit also older seemed to be up to date. Love the North Oaks area, very nice. Also some awesome treed lots in Grant.

It is quite overwhelming but we have until the end of June to actually move and will be looking at homes/areas as much as possible.

Still need to look at Medina/Plymouth/EP...I want to be extremely thorough and see as much as possible...although yup, some areas are way out there.
