For something a little different, I invite you all to Russian Christmas Eve at St. Mary's Cathedral in Nordeast. The vigil starts at 6pm on Christmas Eve (January 6). It is a beautiful service, mostly sung.

Here are some pics from a few years ago:

Wondering, is it on 13th? Do the women have to wear head coverings? Are they friendly to strangers or at least allow them in? Sounds interesting, never been but my friends family is from there.

Christmas Eve is January 6. Many women do wear head coverings but not all, it is not required- there are people from many churches there and you'll see a wide variety of dress. We love visitors! - if you're not Orthodox you won't be able to take Communion, but that won't be an issue on Christmas Eve.

Kayekaye, were you asking about the date or the address? I believe St. Mary's is on 17th Avenue NE, but roselily can correct me if I'm wrong.

I wish I could go.....I'll be out of town by then. I have been in Greek Orthodox churches several times, but don't remember ever going to a Russian Orthodox service...

St. Mary's Orthodox Cathedral, Minneapolis, Minnesota

St. Mary's Orthodox Cathedral began in 1887 as an eastern-rite Catholic community founded by Carpatho-Rusyn immigrants, most of whom came from the villages of Becherov, Komlosa, Stebnik, Regetovka in an area north of Presov in eastern Slovakia (then a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire). The community was officially received into the Orthodox Church on the feast of the Annunciation in 1891.

It is not really a Russian church, is it? Also I could not find any indication that it is part of Russian Church abroad or Russian ( Moscow) patriarchate. Are you sure they will have service in Russian? However you are absolutely right Greek, Russian, Ukrainian, Serbian etc are Orthodox Churches and the only difference is that they have services in different languages.

From what I learned there are only two Russian Orthodox Churches in Twins Cities area which have services in Russian

St. Panteleimon Russian Orthodox Church - http://www.stpanteleimon.org
1201 Hathaway Lane N.E.
Fridley MN 55432-5720

Resurrection of Christ Russian Orthodox Church and Skete; Chapel of St. Seraphim of Sarov and Holy Elders of Optina - http://www.resurrectionskete.org
2210 Franklin Avenue S.E.
Minneapolis, MN 55414

By the way January 13th is a New Year(January 1st) by Julian calendar (after Julius Caesar ) and that is why January 7th is actually December 25th by the same calendar.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Oh, I didn't see this in time to respond. St. Mary's is OCA (Orthodox Church of America) which grew out of the Russian Church during the mess at the beginning of the 20th Century (Long, long explanations of church history far too complicated to get into here. Blame the Communists ). This particular service is held by the ROCOR Skete, they borrow the much larger Cathedral space since not everyone would fit in the Skete, which is quite cramped with more than 20 people.

The service is actually in Slavonic, not Russian, though quite a bit is in English as well.
