Chaotic fighting in downtown Minneapolis mars St. Patrick's Day - KMSP-TV

  1. Why does this happen?
  2. Why can't the police talk about this frankly and acknowledge that the youths involved were African American? (Watch the video and you will see that indeed this was a crowd of Black youth.)
  3. WHY, WHY, WHY.....

1. Why? Because young people are generally pretty stupid. I was once, too.
2. Are you sure that 100% of the youth were black? Also, what would be the specific reason to point out that the majority of the youth were black in this instance?
3. See point #1.

Young and stupid is getting pregnant or dropping out of school, or texting and driving (though not necessarily limited to kids) but this type of behavior goes way past "young and stupid". My question stands: Why?

If you look at the video it's pretty clear the crowd, which was estimated to be over 100, were predominantly if not exclusively African American kids. Furthermore, questions remain about who and how this was organized. You can add that question to my above list...

After living down in downtown Minneapolis and Duluth, and then Chicago & Buffalo, NY; I can tell you why this is a particular problem with law enforcement (in Minnesota especially) and non-white youth. For example, many law enforcement officers only have a 2 year community college certificate - from colleges in Hibbing, Saint Cloud, Cloquet - hardly places where they can get on-the-job training when it comes to diverse populations, and the only way to build a relationship with communities of color or gay people or whoever is to actually TALK to them and find out what specific issues are relative to their communities. You can't learn that in a classroom in Hibbing or standing at a gun range at Fond du Lac College in Cloquet. You have to be in those communities and learn from the people who actually live there what life is like. What I noticed in Chicago and especially Buffalo, NY is that these officers knew the issues of specific populations well before they started the police academy and were much better equipped to talk to and address the community. They also seemed better able to establish a presence that was more welcomed and expected in their cities - in Minnesota what I have seen - clearly - is that security, police, and other authorities are very much afraid of black people. As well, the types of black people that end up coming to Minnesota are often not very motivated to seek employment or educational opportunities, but definitely know how to drum up a lawsuit or figure out ways to bait a law enforcement officer and figure out how to make a living out of lawsuits. They know they and their children make people uncomfortable because most have no work ethic or respect for authority that isn't black.

The only thing that has stopped them from behaving this way in public before is the fact that most have active warrants for their arrest. What's changed now is that the cities usually issuing the warrants are more than 150 miles away (Milwaukee, Chicago, etc) and they won't extradite. This is a subculture in the black community that is nearly impossible to reach because they just don't care. They do not understand or care that in 2015, if you are arrested for this kind of violence, battery and larceny, you will be charged with a felony. This felony will mean that, even if you are 17 in 2015, for the REST OF YOUR LIFE, you will have to put that in job applications, you will have to explain that if you want to interview to get into colleges, you will not be allowed past customs if you want to travel abroad (Canada won't even let in Americans with any criminal record of ANY kind now - so if that's how strict Canada has become, just imagine how other countries are); you won't be able to vote, you won't be able to get a loan, you won't be able to do many things that non-felons get to do. This might not seem like much at 18, but wait until you turn 30-45 when most of your major life events occur. Nobody's going to marry someone who can't get a job or housing because he's a lousy provider. You can forget about being a parent too. Nobody wants to have kids with someone they can't trust. You might not be in prison, but I don't think I can state this clearly enough to young people today: everything in the criminal justice system is in a database - a decade or two ago, you could go to another state and maybe forget about whatever happened but today, you go anywhere and all they have to do is enter your name and SSN and up pops everything from your past. DUI? Not only will you have 'whiskey plates' on your car but it's going to be stamped right on your drivers license for everyone to see that you're a drunk driver. These are major changes that will mark you for life. Every choice you make as a 16-year-old these days will affect your chances at so many things in life. It's not a joke. Yes, you are expected to grow up much quicker now - and believe me, society will be much less forgiving in the future of choices that used to be seen as the mistakes of a dumb teenager. These will be felonies that will stay on your record for life. And getting government assistance or housing? If you have a felony you won't qualify for any of those programs. You'll be living on the streets someday as a 60 or 75 year old, and I can't imagine life would be much fun as an older adult who is sleeping on the streets with no money, no food and no place to get clean.

I wish these kids luck because they're gonna need it. I also wish these parents would practice birth control or start taking advantage of terminating early unwanted pregnancies so as to not bring babies into this world who are unloved and unwanted, because these babies will end up with this kind of life someday. If you can't even take care of your own needs then for God's sake don't bring another being into this life!

It is never mentioned that they are black because Minnesotans think there are no race related social problems here. We live in a miraculous middle class utopia where everyone has a great job and can afford their own house. Sure it's a little cold but we aren't racist, we never even mention black people!

Why does it happen? Because black youth are angry. In terms of economic outcomes and segregation, this is one of the worst, if not the actual worst place to grow up as an African American.
