Hey, I am international student here in USA. After attending college in a small new mexico town for almost a year, I am looking to transfer to MNSU campus at Mankato. In fact I've already applied for transfer.

So, I would like to know what kind of a place is it for a college attending 19 yr old guy. I mean is it supposed to be as bad as New Mexico ? How is the night life there ? Any other attractions for someone my age ?

Please help me out a little here , since I really do want to get out of this boring town.

I've been to Mankato several times but never went to school there, so someone else will have to comment on the nightlife. Mankato is a smallish city with about 50,000 in its metro area (city and adjacent towns). Its a big college town and so it should have a large number of young people. Honestly, I've never been too impressed with Mankato--the downtown is pretty quiet and the campus is up on a hill separate from most of the city. But the Minnesota River valley has some nice scenery, and the Twin Cities are only about 75 minutes away if you like bigger cities. It depends what you're looking for. It certainly offers more than a small town, but if you're looking for a cosmopolitan place, Mankato probably wouldn't rank too high.

Well I am just looking for a nice place to attend college in. I came to USA for the sake of studies so that obviously is my first preference. But I also like to go out on weekends and have a good time and shop at nice places. So, this is basically what I am looking for.

So let me rephrase my question. How is Mankato for an average college kid ?

It was fine when I went to college there in the early 80's, and I can only assume the town has expanded in the past 20+ years since I last paid much attention to it.

The Twin Cities is close enough that you can drive up there if you're bored enough, but there were plenty of things to do in Mankato (and North Mankato) itself back then.

I lived in the area for years and loved it (though not a big party person).

The thing you need to do first is make a few friends who like the cold weather (have good winter gear) and can browse the area highlights with you. The clicky area means you'll be able to find others who are not in clicks - so be friendly and others will be friendly back.

Bike trails run from north east side of Mankato to St Peter and beyond or to Faribault.
River Hills mall is ok - but can be seen in about 20 minutes.
Parks are all over the place and watch for festivals in the parks through out the summer.
Mount Kato is an average ski place and the prices are reasonable.
Then there are all those lakes - Washington, The chain of Jeffersons, Swedes' Bay and German, Lake Francis, Elysian and more.
The Vikings are there from August till football season starts if you enjoy that.
There are great pizza places downtown - some of the best I've had.

You'll enjoy the place if you enjoy winters. Also - hook up with some of the many activities for people with disabilities as a volunteer to make some great connections fast.

Well, Mankato has a really cool party scene. The downtown is basically all bars and a sandwich shop. But if I were you , I would apply to UMD in Duluth. A way, way cooler city, with way more stuff to do. More girls, and more of everything. My old roommate went to Mankato, but once he finally visited Duluth, he transferred immediatly. You'll thank me.....

I have not attended the college in a long while but do work across the street. It is a very nice campus and for the most part safe. It really has expanded too in the past few years.

That seems like good advice to me. Duluth has it all over Mankato. A much more dramatic setting overlooking Lake Superior, much more tourist traffic passing through to lend excitement and variety and help the economy. Both are safe, peaceful; and COLD in the winter. But I'd rather be cold in Duluth than Mankato.

What are you studying?
