I drove one January afternoon thru a Delta town of Jonestown.

Seems to be a lot of poverty there

However, people seemed friendly as nearly everyone waved.

To me, in a way Yazoo City has that Vicksburg feel to it in a good way.

Since moving to Greenwood, I would compare it a lot Yazoo City was back in the 80's and 90's. Yazoo City main problem is when you allow one person to own 75% of the business in a town, you are going to have a problem.

I met many local people working hard to keep the place up, with new businesses downtown - certainly from a visitor point of view it's worth getting off that Amtrak train and staying a few nights at the excellent Main Street Hotel. Being right on the edge of the Delta there's also some nice walks up in the hills, the woodland, the Old Bell Road, or down to the Yazoo River.
Technically, Yazoo City is not in the Delta, it's in the hills which are on the fringes of the Delta. I see you talking up Yazoo City every chance you get, this has to be at least the third or fourth thread I've caught you talking about that place, very rare for someone from England to comment on I would think, you must have been really fascinated and moved by that place.

What did the locals think of your accent? I know as a northerner in the American south my accent stand outs, I know a British accent would stand out even more. How were the locals? In my area of Mississippi it's hit or miss, some people are downright rude and lazy, others are the sweet, charming, and talkative southerners you always hear about.

I've only driven through Vicksburg, but it really did not impress me. I see it's a shrinking city, they recently lost their only movie theater, the poverty rate there is very high, and the city doesn't seem to have a lot going for it besides its history, the casino, and the river boat rides. I didn't do a great tour of the city though, so I may be missing a lot. It just seemed like a poorer Meridian with a casino.

Oh ok, I've only been through Meridian like twice!
