Momentum,

I think you will like the Southaven area very much. I have lived here most of my life (36 years). I was born in Memphis and still work there, but I agree with the comments of some of the other posters. I would not live in Memphis now under any circumstances. The north Mississippi area has pretty much anything you will ever need. More and more people that live here are also working here now. We have excellent schools, a new modern hospital, a new Mall in Southaven and numerous smaller shopping centers. There are numerous Parks in the area and a really nice Malco theater.

Of course you can never completely get away from crime, but the crime rate is extremely low compared to Memphis. Southaven has an excellent Police department and Fire department. We also have a brand new public library building next to City Hall.

If you like sports, there are numerous activities in the area to keep you occupied. Baseball and Football and big here. Snowden Grove park in Southaven has one of the largest and best kept youth Baseball complexes in the United States. Little League Teams from all over come here for tournaments.

I know I probably sound like a marketing brochure or something, but I wouldn't live anywhere else. I graduated high school here and raised a family here.

The traffic can be pretty bad sometimes on each of the major roads through DeSoto county. Goodman Road is probably the worst with Church Road a close second. Stateline Road/Main Street can be busy as well. But it is nothing like the two hour commute you talked about. I live just south of Goodman Road and work in downtown Memphis. I usually leave home between 6:30 and 6:45 a.m. and it only takes me 20 to 25 minutes to get to work.

As a Software Developer, I'm pretty much of a Geek as well. In addition to the Best Buy and Circuit City that another person mentioned, there are several smaller computer and electronics stores in the area.

I think the people are really friendly here and I'm sure you and your wife will enjoy living here. Good luck with your move.

For a general overview of the area, Memphis is not the best place to live, but there are some good outlying areas, such as, Southaven. Olive Branch is the safest and building fast. Southaven has some very nice neighborhoods the further east and south you go.

East of Memphis there are nice areas like Bartlett, TN, Germantown, TN and Cordova, TN - all apart of the Memphis mix.

Further south there is Hernando. It has the nice country town feel, but is just minutes from major shopping in Southaven on I-55. Nesbit is squeezed between Southaven/Horn Lake and Hernando.

We have a house in Horn Lake, but the area is running down.

Crime rates decrease the toward Olive Branch and Hernando, but Southaven is basically decent.

Default Hi Momentum, Welcome to the area

What we have here!
Yes, I was relocated too from the Bay Area to Memphis Metro in 92 now live in Southaven, MS.
My other relative also moved to the area in 2004, she sold her 1200sqft condo in SanJose and made enough profit to pay cash for her 2500sqft home here in Southaven and don't have to worry much about her job anymore.
Southaven is bordering S of Memphis along with HornLake and Olive Branch, but if you really want to feel safe, good schools and homes...Try South of Goodman road (about a mile S of TN/MS state line). But anyway, at this stage, I guess you just want to temporary rent an apartment close to your work place while searching for permanent homes right?
Vietnamese population in the Memphis Metro is more than 10K! Picture this every time they have Viet's concert at the casino (30 miles S of Memphis), Vietnamese show up no less than 2000 adults. In around 95, number of Viet's nail shops is over 200, today should be above 400, and of course, you should find plenty of oriental grocery, restaurants and related Asian businesses (it's a small version of Vietnamese in Atlanta here).
Desoto, MS verse SantaClara, CA
1. Better place to raise kids (Kids got not much to do here but study...LOL)
2. Living cost: is main factor (very low compared to CA)
3. Education: Desoto is not as good as CA system, but is one of the best in the region
4. Entertainment: Memphis Tigers (2nd in the nation), NBA Grizzly (3rd...for the draft pick...), 9 casinoes nearby... Well, maintenance your lawn will keep you busy, don't worry you got nothing to do here in the weekend.

Welcome to the area, if you want more details, pictures or such... please do not hesitate. Google Earth will give you a very good idea what the area look like, but still this area is booming, I saw manufacturing, warehouses grew up like mushroom on Stateline, but for living, settle your home along the new I-69 corridor is my recommendation for now.
Good luck bro and welcome home.

Default Thanks for the new posts and information

I haven't posted in a while and it is nice to see all the people here still answering my questions. I just wanted to say thanks to everyone! A lot of people here say I am crazy to want to move so far away from California, but with all the postive responses regarding the Southaven and Desoto county cities it is really encouraging. (Now if I can just convince my wife ). I just don't see as good a future here in the bay area and I always wanted to live in a place that is growing.

I plan to visit Southaven in about a month or so before moving this summer. I will post updates for anyone interested. When I do move I will be renting but am also very interested in buying a house. They all seem like a bargain compared to San Jose.

Anyway bye for now but I will be back...

Please mention them!

Momentum,
If you are in IT, you are not limited to just working in this area. I work from home for a company based in the Chicago suburbs. Comcast Work At Home level internet gives me the same speed as working in any of my companies satellite offices.

As for entertainment, I had a great time last night at the Springfest concert at Snoden Grove Amphitheater. Twelve minutes after the show was over, I was at home.
