Bay St. Louis/ Long Beach Area
Hi,
We may be moving down to the Bay St. Louis general area from Ohio, is this a nice town? I have never been in the south, so I am not sure what to expect. Are there a lot more bugs down there? Is it always humid, or does the humidity go away in the fall? My hair tends to grow in the humidity
How far inland was the flooding from Katrina? Were all the flooded houses torn down?
I appreciate any info!
Thanks!

reynosa street gulfport ms - Google Maps
Right about where that A is, is where I lived when in Mississippi. All the houses on Castile Rd were torn down but two.. a few house were also torn down on my street. Habitat 4 Humanity was building all new homes there 14 feet or so off the ground. in that picture on 39th and 34th is an old Apartment complex that used to be a crime filled mess, but Katrina cleaned house. It was in the process of getting ready to be torn down when I left. 37th and 39th were being laid out and readied to join when I left as well. There is a school on 34th street that was being torn down as well.. There was lots of stuff being torn down, and stuff going up just as fast.. the area was changing something quick. As for along the beach, most everything not washed away was torn down.. some people rebuilt, most wont.. cant. Flooding was city wide. I have pictures of downtown and the damage it did to Gulfport in the picture thread at the top of this forum section.
Bay Saint Louis the main area anyways looks a lot better than most of the coast. The Silver Dollar casino is my favorite casino they had on the coast too..
There are lots of bugs down there.. and frogs, they love to chirp at night.. I missed that to be honest. The summers are brutal with heat and humidity, but the fall to spring are very nice. Oh and I hope you like thunder boomers, not just storms but BOOMERS, they have plenty of them.. man I miss those too.
You'll like it down there.. I thought it was a great place to live, even though it had its faults too.

Hi, I live in the Bay St Louis Waveland area, just moved back after 3 years. Bay ST Louis and Waveland were hit harder than anywhere from Katrina, this is where the eye of the storm hit. We are what you would call the forgotten commuities because all of the press focuses on Biloxi and New orleans. My personal opinion is that depending upon your preference you may like the Bay St Louis area. Less commercialized than BIloxi/Gulfport area. Quaint shops, quieter. But, if you enjoy a lot of traffic and malls that sort of thing you would probably be better suited to Biloxi area. I go there (approx 28 miles) one time weekly to do shopping, etc. My son takes music at Mississippi Music in Biloxi, great full service music shop with great teachers. But, keep in mind, Bay ST Louis area is still under a great deal of construction, only store at this time is a walmart, and a couple dollar stores. I do wish they had a grocery store. But, for now, the one time weekly to Gulfport/Biloxi is not too bad. Good luck.

Thats Bull.. there is more than just Wal*Mart. There is plenty of shopping choices.. the Mall is open and the Strip mall next to it has many shopping options.. it was just updated. Most of the business is off I-90 and on Pass Road now. Whats not there is on I-49 above I-10.. There is a Best buy and all sorts of other stores there.. heck they even have a What-A-Burger there, and another outdoor outlet mall thing.. what they don't have the Crossroads does. And if there is nothing there.. Just drive to Mobile AL. not far at all. Trust me there is lots to choose from in the area.
The Building is a good sign.. lots of growth.. lots of change. Lots of good paying jobs.
But if Wal*Mart is your thing.. shop at the one in D'Iberville. The I-49 one is a mad house.

yes, Muhany, if you read my post, they do in Biloxi, Gulfport. I am talking about BAY ST LOUIS WAVELAND area, which, is the FORGOTTEN part of the coast about 28 miles from Biloxi. Like I said, I shop in BILOXI and Gulfport about one time a week not too far as in Bay Waveland area we still only have a Walmart and a few dollar stores, no grocery store Yet, hopefully soon we will.
But, to me, I still love the Bay St Louis area better because although we are removed from all of the other "stores" we still have small town feel that I enjoy. Just my preference.
But, as I stated, yes Biloxi, Gulfport, D'Iberville have a great deal of big box mall type stores if that is what you prefer.

Sorry my misunderstanding then. I also like Bay Saint Loise, and when I move back there I was thinking of living on that side of the bridge. I thought I saw a grocery store or two in Bay Saint Loise.. one in the shopping center on the corner headed to Hollywood Casino.
Were you there when they had the ferry? That was fun.. now they have the bridge open the ferry is no longer used. But really everything is so close there, driving into Gulfport is not all that bad.

The old Winn Dixie was going to reopen then it seems something happened with the marsh rats getting into the building and then the copper tubing was stolen sometime after katrina. There have been rumors that another grocery store was going to open sometime, I hope soon. It is not that bad of a drive but, I think a grocery store would be awesome as I am a cook, I enjoy a variety of options in groceries, Walmart is ok, you can get just about anything but variety and meat? I will not buy there. Diamondhead is the next closest thing which is funny because years ago people actually used to complain who lived in Diamondhead that they had to drive to BSL to shop, oh well, overall after all Bay Waveland has been through they are really coming along, another new drugstore (Walgreens) just opened and Lowes, homedepot are both in Waveland but my top wish would be a grocery store.
I was able to visit when the ferry was here but the new bridge is just awesome! You can walk with a walking/bike track all the way over, great walk at night for a change from my usual beach walk at night.
I think you may enjoy this side of the bridge, much slower paced than Biloxi/Gulfport but, not too far if you want to go.

We just moved down here. Bay St Louis is a cute town with lots of character, even after the storm. There seems to be more of a drive to get the old Town back than you see in Pass Christian, but maybe I am mistaken there. We chose "The Pass", as they call it. We just happened to find a house more like what we were looking for here. We shop the groceries in DIamondhead or Gulfport. Bay St Louis is where I've gone recently to find gifts. There are also a lot of restaurants there. Slidell, LA, isn't far and has a lot of choices for your typical box stores. People are super friendly. It is a little shocking how friendly. I have lived in other parts of MS and the south before, but I have never had anyone offer to mow my lawn for me or invite my family to dinner after just having met at Lowes. Both of these happened within the first 2 weeks down here. It is an interesting culture, but I think there is a niche for everyone.
And yes, the bugs are crazy. Just wait until Love Bug season.

I lived in Diamondhead for 22 years, and Bay St Louis was our nearest real town.
Loved BSL. Has great food, wonderful little shops, delightful antiquing, and a small town feel.
If I were to ever move back to MS, I would live there or the Pass (Pass Christian).
