My bad OC

Jazz Appreciation Month,” like many similar designations, has a theoretical ring to it — a commendable impulse, but not necessarily one that calls for much in the way of specific action.

Press-Register fileHarry Anderson, shown at the Gulf Coast Ethnic & Heritage Jazz Festival, will play a show at the Mobile Civic Center on April 16.But this month in Mobile there will indeed be action, not to mention abundant music. In fact, thanks to variety of performing ensembles, arts organizations, public festivities and independent contributors, there will scarcely be a day when this uniquely American music won’t be in the air.
“There’s something on that calendar for everybody,” said Janetta Whitt-Mitchell, a Mobile Arts Council board member and coordinator of the Jazzin’ the Schools Project. “I’m hoping everybody will find their niche.”
“We open with a community concert involving young folk, and we close with another community concert involving young people,” she said of the month’s activities.
Event sponsors and presenters include Youth Empowered for Success; the Jazzin’ the Schools Project; the Legacy 166 Heritage Fine Arts and Cultural Series; the Alabama State Council on the Arts; the New England Foundation for the Arts; the Mobile Arts Council; state Rep. Joseph Mitchell; and the city of Mobile.
