The OP has my sympathies. I grew up in the Flathead Valley, graduated from Columbia Falls HS, lived in Columbia Falls for several years.
When I go back for a visit, I stay at a campground on Hungry Horse Reservoir and only go to town to visit people, then get out of the area as soon as possible.
It has changed, and not necessarily for the better. I don't like it there any more.
But then, somebody who didn't know it in the "bad old days" might enjoy it just fine.

Oh, yeah, the gas tanks advice is a good idea, especially in the winter. When it gets down to half a tank, fill it up. You might also think about getting an AWD vehicle, as well. No, you don't NEED four wheel drive, but All Wheel Drive (like a Subaru Outback) is great in the snow!
