When I was in my mid 20s, I was able to rent a loft next to the beach for 950, eventually 1150. Cant see the same places renting more for 1250 now.
I have a nice one bedroom apartment in downtown monterey, walking distance to the beach for 1150 a month. Theyre out there, you just need to look.

Another big producer of local jobs is the military. This in turn drives quite a few jobs in education and research at institutions like NPS and the DLI. I know many who live here and work in these areas.
