Obviously this should be in the motorcycle section, but there I'm just preaching to the choir.

We've seen plenty of citizens attempting to take a stand against loud motorcycles, even creating activist groups like mecalm.org. This is a bad idea. You a. dealing with a culture that is inherently rebellious and fairly familiar with being disliked. The more we complain about loud exhausts and obnoxious motorcycles, the more riders will modify their pipes. They will do it to spite you. Some riders are tricked into believing that loud pipes save lives, others want attention, and some may just like the way their bikes sound... but the majority are seeking attention and counteracting those who complain about loud exhausts. By forming these groups, constantly speaking out about it, looking bikers directions, giving them dirty looks, etc, you are giving them both attention and a reason to annoy you (because they know it pisses you off... rebellious nature). Best form of action? Just ignore them... you'll see a change. Same goes for loud cars.

Not trying to start a debate. I'm obviously a motorcyclist myself and a huge advocate of incentives for riders (lane splitting, hov lanes, etc)... Just jaded from hearing people constantly complain about motorcycles and getting nowhere.

Maybe the police should cite these modified motorcycle pipes "Look at Me! I'm Cool" riders. Violation of noise ordnance. Illegal modification; Not street legal. More revenue. I'm for that.

Same with the morons with the illegal mufflers on the little cars.

Well....who started it?

The folks putting on the loud obnoxious mufflers?

Or the people that complained about them?

Bikers are rebellious and want to push back, which just causes those oppose them to push back even harder. And round and round and downhill it goes since neither side not only refuses to budge ground, but is trying to take just a little more. Pretty lame and immature as far as I'm concerned for both sides.

Motorcycling and recreational driving may not be a bad thing, but acting like a complete ass usually IS.

Once *that* cycle of one-upmanship is rolling, how do you stop it?

I've had sportbikes for 17 years. I can tolerate most bike exhausts, even aftermarket ones. To me, it's the Harley type bikes that are the worst offenders. Damn things are loud enough to break your ear drums. They crack open the throttle, hellish noise ensues, and you'd think that with all that noise, they'd be hauling ass.

But no, they're just putting along. Very inefficient, and they give all motorcycle riders a bad name.

That doesn't mean it belongs in this forum.

Yes because they wear leather jackets, they must be hells angles. There's nothing rebellious about the majority of motorcycle (cruisers in particular) riders. They're just lawyers and insurance salesmen trying to look cool.

in the early 80's on a major show/cruise weekend back home in WI, my bud got stopped for exhaust on his AMX. As the officer was writing out a ticket, the local 'club' drove by, their exhaust shaking the pavement. We kindly pointed that out to the officer and asked why not them, he just looked at us with that "are you serious" look.
I'm not against bikers or actually modded exhaust on car or bike, as it's usually the drivers who create the wrong attn for others.

I dont own a bike, but I like the loud pipes. Sometimes, they can be annoying, but when you think about a chopper, thats part of it.

Saw this Saturday. I thought it was pretty neat, windows were up until towards the end.

Pretty big funeral procession of motorcycles - YouTube

Loud exhaust is just that loud. Some types are tolerable.. a sport bike, a big cubic inch drag motor with a huge cam, an offshore powerboat with dry exhaust. Sure they can be annoying due to the loudness but for the most part sound good. What is the absolute worst is a Harley with open exhaust, it's just a horribly annoying sound, followed by cherry bomb mufflers that are usually on 50's era hot rods or on older lifted pickups, and lastly are the "fart" cans that these kids put on their "fast and furious" style of cars.

I have never installed a loud exhaust on my previous bikes, but it seriously does make sense.

Maybe when drivers can do a better job looking out for motorcycles, they won't feel the need to do things like install loud pipes.

I no longer ride because I had several very close calls of people merging directly into my line as I was parallel with them. It was insane.
