I brought up this subject months ago and can't find it anymore... I went to court and loss for driving with loud music... no surprise there... apparently there is a cop that gives out a dozen of these tickets... along with a dozen tickets for window tint but not one for speeding... because speeding isn't an issue in my town... I guess they have to give some kind of ticket to get money... anyhow, I notice while in court about 50 people were there... half of them were unemployed and instead of giving them a fine, he gave them 20 hours community service or probation... for those who were employed he gave them fines... When I got my fine it got me thinking... could I ask him to substitute the fine for community service? And then it got me thinking again, why shouldn't we have that right to begin with... it would probably cut down on the number of tickets cause the police can't use it as a money-maker for them... what do you think?

Because tickets are revenue for the cops. Hard to make an unemployed person pay money he doesn't have.

I assume if you called the office and asked, you'd get your answer.

I am too....but the fact is you do make money, even if you have none left over after paying for bills, etc.

I fail to see the difference...except that I'm not relying on someone else to pay my stuff for me (in my mind I feel I'd deserve the option just like anyone else)

I think you should ask the judge why you don't have the... uh... "right"... to demand community service instead of a monetary forfeiture for violating a state statute.

Community service has always been an option for paying fines in my city whether you have a job or not. Just because someone has a job doesn't mean they can afford to pay the fine. (We're not getting into the issue of how the law shouldn't have been broken in the first place if it couldn't be afforded. That's a different topic.) I have a job. I make decent money. But at the end of the month when all my bills are paid, I barely have 2 dimes to rub together. My job also affords me a very flexible schedule with plenty of free time during the work week. If I were to get a ticket that I couldn't afford, community service might be a good option for me.

I did community service once when I was a teenager to pay for a ticket. I cleaned windows on city buses for a couple days. That's it.
