I hate that I have to second guess, but it makes me wonder what the film community is applauding exactly, and if general audiences will share the same enthusiasm.
Either way, that kind of reception looks like a breakthrough for comic book movies, as far as critical praise and potentially nominations/awards in non-technical categories.
There are clips of the movie on Twitter. NOT for the faint of heart! (and not for young audiences, even if they were allowed to watch Deadpool or Logan)
Ignore the comic book branding, the movie is extremely R-rated Hannibal Lecter material.
Reading all these rave reviews, I find myself wondering: If WB/DC has such a masterpiece on their hands, why don't they run with it? It looks like someone other than Patty Jenkins got one of their characters right. So they're just going to shelve it?
If this movie is half as good as everyone says it is, I would much rather see more like this than more CGI operas.

There will be more movies "like this." Count on it.
WB should have stuck to being the "darker alternative" in the first place. Now that new management is in place, there should be far less of a commotion about "getting that Marvel money."
Go watch the full movie. Don't watch crappy files of leaked scenes.
I probably watched a total of one minute of the movie (not including the trailers), so hopefully it has more to offer than that.
But now I'm prepared for the movie's tone, which I think will really surprise audiences expecting a "comic book movie."

More stand-alones. Yes, I hope so. But that's not my point. Aside from WONDER WOMAN, DC's movieverse has struggled to find a coherent vision of quality. Now they apparently have one. And instead of running with it, they are going to do more CGI flicks with these characters.

Not sure what you're getting at. You want a Jokerverse? Phillips made a standalone film. His Joker will not meet Reeves' Batman.
If what you mean is that WB should not mess with their directors' visions, then, yes. Of course they should not. That's how things got screwed up in the first place.
