Nostalgia has always been a big part of pop culture. When I was a kid, everyone was in love with the '50s and '60s, so I grew up watching movies like AMERICAN GRAFFITI, THE WANDERERS, THE OUTSIDERS, etc. RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK took us back to the '30s! And at home we were watching TV shows like HAPPY DAYS, LAVERNE & SHIRLEY, etc.

What makes great art? A great artist.

The problem with a lot of "recycled" pop culture is not that they are recycled, it's that they are bad. They do not represent the hard work and vision of great artists, but the "brand recognition" and mercenary work of corporations hiring hacks to churn out "product."

You think Shakespeare was original? Nope. He mined history, folklore, Classical drama, etc. for other ideas. He made them his own, to be sure, but most of his best plays were "recycled pop culture."

So will the Barbie movie end up being another cinematic McMovie? Or the work of a great artist? I am certainly hoping for a great movie, because Greta Gerwig has proven herself a great artist. But who knows? This could also be another HOWARD THE DUCK.

Heh. He wasn't even subtle. Some actors from Shakespeare's troupe visited Denmark to perform for Frederik II in his new, opulent castle of Kronborg - next to the township of "Helsingoer". They took notes. And a few years later, the 12th-century Danish tale of Prince "Amled" gets reworked, and now a certain Prince "Hamlet" mopes around in an opulent castle at "Elsinore".

The thing is, pop culture by its nature provides a ready-made reference frame for an artist to work from. You can get away with spending much less time putting down the groundwork. That has value.

Someone would have to pay ME to go and see this movie, and even then I would have to weigh whether or not I wanted to waste my time.

No, it isn't. It's garbage and once word gets out, sales are going to drop significantly next week.

The promotion for this movie shows how intertwined the big corporations are. CNN (website)? Articles about the movie, the creator of Barbie, etc.

Amazon? Check. Yahoo? Check. Clothing? Check. Food products? Check. Architectural Digest? Check (a tour of her house). Rollerblades? Check.

Simply one of the most saturated promotions I've ever seen.
