This re-imaged live action theme has critics and audience with rave reviews in its premieres. Where do you stand on this? How will it compare to Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin remakes?

73% at Rotten Tomatoes isn't exactly "rave," but there was no way this one as going to be "rotten," with a black lead replacing a white animated character. I don't really trust reviews any more anyway, as practically every "critic" is a corporate sell-out these days. I don't really go to the movies anymore and I don't subscribe to Disney + so I'll probably never see it.
I immediately dismiss any criticism from anyone who isn't going to see the movie. They're only drawing conclusions based on the skin color of the main character. Apparently all mermaids are white and anything else is OUTRAGEOUS!!
I wonder if those people were just as outraged when Italians Romeo and Juliet were changed to Polish/Irish Tony and Puerto Rican Maria?
Meh. No intention to see this in the theater, but I'll probably watch it on streaming eventually.
Anyone who has their knickers in a twist over a mermaid movie needs to re-examine his or her priorities in life. There are lots of things in the world warranting our fury. Mermaid movies are not one of them.

Pay to see it in the theaters, hell no. When it's streaming or broadcast I may watch.
My only problem is Disney feels the need to Fubar their old movies. They should just make new movies, with new stories.

I agree. But it's not worth getting angry over. I don't understand the Disney anger from so many people. If you don't want to watch a movie, don't watch a movie. Problem solved.
I think Disney has almost succeeded in ruining both STAR WARS and MARVEL. So what? Just don't watch it. There are a ton of great TV shows and movies to stream.

They do make new movies with new stories. They also reinterpret/reimagine/recreate existing stories to breathe new life into them, which is pretty much the nature of storytelling. Stories are not meant to be told once and never told again.
I won't be seeing it in the theater for two reasons - one, my attention span is garbage and I can only sit through movies that are unusually engaging (like, say, "Everything Everywhere All at Once") without dividing them into sessions, and two, I'm not a fan of Disney's "live action" remake trend even when it's done well. That said, I've seen clips of a few of the songs, and it does look and sound very good. The actress playing Ariel has a perfect voice for the role, IMO...very sweet and earnest and clear as a bell.
I'm too old for Disney2.0, and I don't have kids to force me to watch this stuff, so... Out of sight, out of mind
I didn't even know they remade Cinderella, Beauty & The Beast, or Aladdin... Like most, I prefer the classics as they were.
