Couldn't pass this one up. I am a big fan of war movies and can't even begin to name them all. Here are a few, most have been named already.
Full Metal Jacket, Hamburger Hill, Platoon, Go Tell the Spartans, The Deerhunter, Sands of Iwo Jima, Red Badge of Courage, The Thin Red Line, Hell Is For Heros, Midway, Band of Brothers, Porkchop Hill, Das Boot, Gone With the Wind, Gettysburg, Apocalypse Now, Lawrence of Arabia and I would like to say, Paths of Glory but I can't stand Kirk Douglas.
I also think Where Eagles Dare was a great movie and I enjoyed Dirty Dozen because I adore Lee Marvin.
thx for the thread. In thinking of my favorites, I looked over at Imbd and the reviews brought back so many good memories of seeing those films....
I have watched We Were Soldiers twice now, the last time with Movie Notes on AMCHD. I looked up info on the storyline of the movie plus info on the actors, but also found out quite a bit from watching the movie again with the Movie Notes included. I learned some very interesting things, such as:
Some of the NVA soldier actors had actually been in the NVA during Viet Nam War. That sounded awefully weird to me!
The one NVA soldier who tryed to bayonet Moore, was from So Viet Nam and his dad became a Freedom Fighter after the U.S. pulled out of Saigon.
Years after Viet Nam ended, Lt Colonel Moore and the Lt Colonel who was in charge of the NVA met each other and discussed the battle. All I can say to that is "WOW"!
The one U.S. soldier who tryed to save another shot U.S. soldier and got shot in the back a few times while carrying him was pretty bloody looking, but the Director wanted to make the movie as realistic as he could saying "as it happened!"
We Were Soldiers is much better than the Chuck Norris and Rambo ones were. As far as Saving Private Ryan, good movie, but when people were actually involved in a War, as I was, We Were Soldiers is very authentic!
I was onboard a Navy Destroyer/Carrier Escort Group and made my first WestPac Cruise in Dec 1968. We spent time on the "gun line" at Yankee Station.
