Saving Private Ryan wins by a long shot in my book. My other faves include Glory, Gods and Generals, Thin Red Line, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket.
Gods and Generals, yikes! I wanted to like it, I really did, and it had it's moments, and I loved the book. But the movie was like attending a 3 hour sermon in church, and about as exciting.
Critics and even civil war buffs treated it worse than I did above. Much better was Gettysburg.
I personally love Black Hawk Down. It's non-stop action from beginning to end and really opens your eyes to what war is like from the perspective of those actually out there fighting for our freedom.

You see, I kinda liked it. There are many drawn out slow parts, but so many good ones, too. That opening scene is probably the best opening for a movie since time began. I also loved the speech that Jeff Daniels delivered, as well as the Irish brigade at Fredericksburg, the scene with the Union battery on the hill, etc, etc.

I agree. I forgot to put Black Hawk Down in my list of faves. Great flick! Not nearly as realistic as Saving Private Ryan (which really gives you an idea of what our troops have gone through), but still very well done. 2 thumbs up for Black Hawk Down.
Fantastic choices ! Those are top of my list too.
I also love "Joyeux Noel" about the brief truce in the Trenches at Christmas and "A Very long Engagement".
I would add "The Longest Day" to that list too. I grew up with it and my Grand-Mother saw the line of allied ships on the Normandy Coast horizon that day and watching that movie with her always made it so real for me.
Oh Yes, I forgot about those two excellent movies (I really need to buy some new DVD's )
You might be wondering, Why I didn't add Gallipoli?
It's because, I now find it overrated, It's not that it's a bad movie! (The famous "Runner" scene, Is still haunting), It's just that, On a recent re-watching, I found the movie, Too be slow to unfold and quite uninvolving (Maybe I've just seen it too often?)
I still say that it's a classic (As it definately is!), But I'll take the above mentioned movies and the ANZACS TV series over it.

Great Escape
Bridge on the River Kwai
Paths of Glory (I know it's anti-war but I love that great battle scene)
Spartacus (does this qualify as a war movie?)
Patton
Saving Private Ryan
Hamburger Hill
Full Metal Jacket
Platoon
We Were Soldiers
Some of the older WWII movies were good as well but I cant remember the names. Worst War movie of all time - Thin Red Line.
