Tsai Ming-liang has such a unique style, and you know that every frame has been thought out ahead of time with nothing left to chance. This film is so visual, you don't even notice that the first dialog spoken by a cast member is more than 44 minutes into this 82 minute film!
I definitely need to see more of Tsai Ming-liang's work. Most of his shots are held for minutes, and sometimes start out in the middle of an act where you really don't know what is going on until it continues it's movement. Once such scene, a young woman is sitting in a booth and there's a table in front of her and to the side, and there's a lighted advertisement that you can see in the distance through her large window and there's a florescent light blinking - and after a while she continues her movement and you realize what she was doing. You see her earlier and she's almost still, and seems like everything's normal - and then she starts walking.
The second Tsai Ming-liang film I've seen in as many days. Nick Pinkerton in Reverse Shot says if interviews surrounding Stray Dogs’ premiere at this year’s Venice Film Festival are to be believed, it’s very possibly the last film that Tsai will make for cinemas. That would be a shame. I have a PAL format Stray Dogs dvd incoming from Amazon UK, and am on the hunt to see more of his films.
Nobody left my showing either. I'm actually not surprised this film is so polarizing, I think you either really love it or hate it. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I didn't find it depressing at all. As they say, different strokes.
Glad you mentioned the soundtrack. Any film with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds is a huge plus for me!
I actually thought this would be good. I was excited and hopeful when the opening bars to The Temptation's Papa Was A Rolling Stone started at the beginning - but like leading a horse to water that turns out to be salty, they didn't even cough up for some vocals and they cut out the singing. Not - one - 70s - song - in - the - whole - film. What a gyp. How can this compete with Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice (2014), or David O. Russell's American Hustle (2013)? Dialog was a jumbled mess. Plot all over the whole creation. I would've passed on the dvd, let alone pay money to see this. Live and learn.

I was forced to watch Nice Guys last Sunday (my sister invited me to go to the movies with her). What a waste of a good Saturday afternoon. It was one of the worst movies I've seen in a long time. All of the actors must have just wanted a paycheck.

The Conjuring 2 (2016), James Wan ★★★★★
The Clash's London Calling, The Hollies' Bus Stop - both within the first few minutes. Throw in Elvis later in the film. Oh, and James Wan comes through again.
