I'd have to throw Robert Duvall, Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen into the ring.

Robert Duvall. Hands down. Gene Hackman a close second. Billy Bob Thorton. His own worst enemy, but check out his performance in Sling Blade. Of course, Duvall steals their scene together with hardly even speaking a line. Tommy Lee Jones is wonderful. Ed Harris. Give me these actors over the Hollywood "Pretty Boys" anyday of the week.

Duvall in The Apostle. Amazing acting. Simply amazing. Include Lonesome Dove. He steals every scene in every film he makes.

Al Pacino, Johnny Depp and Edward James Olmos. All have played an amazing variety of roles where you can almost not recognize them from one to the other.

I dont think anyone in the current era or any other area comes close to Johnny Depp. Best actor the world has scene to this day.

Daniel Day Lewis also gives consideration.

I cannot believe that I submitted my list and did not include my favorite actor Gary Oldman. Boy howdy was I asleep on that one because Gary Oldman is my answer to anything awesome.

I agree, he is an excellent actor.

Another one that I like is Edward Norton.
