I didnt like the rape scene in it,just un-needed violence like most stuff released now!!
I havent seen the original one....
I saw the original, which was a brutally violent rape-murder-revenge saga. Probably worse than the remake.
I used to be a huge horror film fan, but I did not care for it and never bothered with the remake.
All of that being said, it should be noted that the first was a (very!) loose remake of Ingemar Bergman's THE VIRGIN SPRING. I figured this out when I briefly became a huge Bergman fan.
Pure revenge drama type film. Labeled as horror more due to shocking scenes. The remake had a great cast however, Mainly Tony Goldwyn and Monica potter who were very convincing in their roles as parents thrust into a nightmare with no way out but to become as savage as the bad guys.
The '70s indulged graphic violence as much as the modern era. It was only the limitations of the filmmakers' collective vision and the special makeup effects of the day that defined the boundaries.
Case in point: I Spit on Your Grave, Dawn of the Dead, Cannibal Holocaust (released in 1980).
Was this the remake where someone's head ended up in a microwave? Or someone was tied up outside for the birds? I think I have seen it....
When I was little my parents and their friends were horror movies fanatics, so I saw movies I shouldn't have as a kid. I know I've seen the original, but it's been so long. I don't mind blood and guts but I am sensitive to torture and rape scenes today.
The original has this part whenever they show the bad guys they play this horrible "apple dumpling gang" type music that just does not feel like it should be there and takes you out of the movie. In fact, I believe Halloween 4 or 5 did the same thing whenever they showed these two idiot cops. Couldn't figure out why they would add such a thing to a movie like this (LHOTL)
The remake was good. I fast forward the rape scene as I don't wish to see that stuff. I didn't recognize Garrett Dillihunt right away, as the father of the young boy. He can play creepy well.
