Here's someone that you've heard your whole life, but never knew who he was. He's a guitar player/singer song writer who has done many movie sound tracks in addition to his incredible inventory of fine records. His name is Ry Cooder and he's one of the best. Ry is the White guy playing guitar in this selection.
Relational here's session musicians that you may know without knowing you know.
I read on Wikipedia that Hal Blaine has been on more number-one hit songs than anyone. These include "I Get Around" by the Beach Boys, The Byrds rendition of "Mr. Tambourine Man", "Monday Monday" by The Mamas and the Papas, "Windy" by the Association, "Eve of Destruction" performed by McGuire, "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" by Simon & Garfunkel (I remember the drums on that one), and "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" by John Denver. Whether he's been on the most or not he might be one of the lesser known people in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Here he is with ex-Governor Mike Huckabee.
Grady Martin was a session guitarist on many hits. He might be best known for "El Paso" and "Oh Pretty Woman". Other songs he played in include "Coal Miner's Daughter" and "Help Me Make it Through the Night". Some credit him with discovering, albeit by accident or mistake, the "fuzz effect" used by several rock/hard-rock groups. Although he was inducted into the "Rockabilly Hall of Fame" I think he might still count as obscure. Fortunately he, unlike some session musicians, did have his own band for a time. (Some of the others are hard to find except in videos for other groups) Here's him with his country-jazz or country-swing band.
Carol Kaye might be better known, but I wanted to include a woman. She might be one of the most recorded bassists in history. She reportedly can be heard on "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys, "Homeward Bound" by Simon & Garfunkel, "Sixteen Tons" by Tennessee Ernie Ford, and played guitar on "You've Lost that Loving Feeling" by the Righteous Brothers.
