I stopped listening to commercial radio stations because they all suck now. Only NPR and satellite radio play anything decent these days. But, if I could control a classic rock station for a day, here are a few changes I'd make:
--Play any Genesis song from when Peter Gabriel was in the band. Short of satellite radio, I've never heard anything from Genesis predating 1980 on the airwaves.
--Play Deep Purple songs other than "Hush" or "Smoke on the Water." This band deserves to be known for more than just those 2 songs!
--Stop playing so much Led Zeppelin (good band but ridiculously overplayed on classic rock stations)
--Play more Beatles, early The Who, and other great 60's acts (would you believe that most classic rock stations have stopped playing 1960's music short of a few Rolling Stones songs and maybe some miscellaneous stuff here and there?!)
--Stop playing hair metal (except for David Lee Roth-era Van Halen because they're alright)
Oh, and last but not least - get rid of all the DJ's that talk like rednecks (we've got way too many of them on the classic rock stations in Texas).

I agree with everything posted. Most notably the hair metal part. Hair Metal is in no way, shape, or form classic anything.

They're probably trying to appeal to the beer-drinking Bubbas who are too young to remember the 60's and too old to like anything that came out after the 80's.
KLBJ FM in Austin, Texas (where I live) is a good example of a station I would love to change. I used to listen to it in the 1990's when it was a great radio station that played a mix of good classic rock and some modern rock. But now almost all they play is 70's - 80's c**k rock with awful new rock music from hack artists like Nickleback, Theory of a Dead Man, Breaking Benjamin, etc. thrown in just to crank up the puke factor. But the thing that completely turned me off to the station is when they started getting these really dumb redneck and sexist DJ's.
Anyway, I might be a little off topic now, but I just had to rant about how bad classic rock radio has gotten.
I would also like to hear them play the group Survivor on the classic rock stations, I can never understand why they never play the group Survivor on the classic rock stations when their music is similar to Foreigner & Journey.
The only Styx song I ever hear played on the radio is "Come Sail Away". Well, sometimes "Renegade" but very very infrequently.
I don't hear any KISS played. It's been quite a while since I've heard Molly Hatchet. Come to think of it, the station I listen to SAYS it plays three decades of rock (70's, 80's, 90's) but the majority of the songs are from the 80's. Marketing, I suppose. Kids that grew up listening to music in the 90's have their I-Pods, so they're not exposed to the commercials on public radio.
The last 10 to 15 years of classic rock radio puts me to sleep anymore. Yo Jacor and Clear Channel! Gee thanks Jacor and Clear Channel! Love your KISS play selection (keep it simple stupid). The idea of playing the same 200 songs, or is it 50 songs, is just absurd. There are a LOT songs listed on this thread already that were played steady on fm rock stations, and they have dropped like a stone, as if this stuff never existed to start with. That is just flat wrong. Those artists listed previously made good music during that time, their albums SOLD well in that time, and to pretend that the stuff that these behemoth media organizations wants to ramrod down the listeners throats makes me ill.
