Southwest to open route to Oakland .
I have a feeling this will be a profitable route for them.

This is great news! It also still leaves open the possibility of a nonstop to Japan from Nashville. If this had been a United flight to SFO then I doubt we would have gotten the nonstop to japan.

OK, I have to ask. WHY would there be a Nashville to Japan non-stop flight? I mean, is there some sort of need for one? Do we have a large Japanese population I don't know about?

Automotive primarily. Nissan HQ here, Bridgestone HQ here, Hankook Tires in Clarksville and a whole host of Japanese supplier corporations. Nashville is also home to the Southeast's Japanese Consulate on West End. There have been high level talks about getting a nonstop here over the last couple years and they have evidently increased recently in seriousness. With the Bridgestone consolidation here as well as another NA headquarters recently announced in Murfreesboro, then it is becoming more and more likely.
