I have been here 9 months. Seems everything revolves around the casinos - attractions like aquariums and theaters and eating and shopping - so they are a little hard to avoid completely.
good luck to you all
I can think of at least three theaters not in the casinos- one on Rainbow near Cheyenne, one near DI and Decatur, and one in Green Valley (I believe it's on Sunset near Valle Verde?). I'm sure there are probably others that have been built since I moved back to NJ in 99, but those are three I recall.

2 of those are now closed, showing how much the casino is important to the city. DI and Decatur, is now a Smith's. Sunset and Green Valley is closed. There are movies at Tropicana and Pecos, but its only second-run. The Colonnade on South Eastern isn't near a casino, but also doesn't attract a good crowd. There is also Neonopolis, but OMG its on Fremont Street, so you might not approve of it. There's another at Sahara and Fort Apache. I don't understand people that live here and think so badly about casinos. Didn't you come here with an understanding that tourism is the main industry in Nevada and it mainly revolves around CASINOS?

Kuddo's to you Lvkewlkid, it's like folks moving next to an International Airport and then complain the noise to too loud and they want the State to step in to create a law to reduce the noise. HELLO it's a casino driven community, it was there when you moved in and it will be there when yo move out. If you don't like it move out, it's your call.

Well yes, I did move here with that in mind. I just didn't realize that even the theaters and family fun were part of the tourism industry. So I think maybe I was a little niave. That's why I want other people to understand it. It isn't the "family friendly" place that I was led to believe. How many times did I hear, "Oh it's just like any city where people live." It's not! I don't think it's very good at family life at all. The schools and kids activities at the community center are very crowded. The tourism is local and it's adult oriented. It just doesn't work for me and my kids.
Don't get me wrong. I think casinos are great. I love to go visit the spas, eat dinner all of it! I just think it's not so great for kids. I knew that when we came it would be for a short time. I don't want my kids to "grow up" here. If they weren't part of the equation, besides the incredible drying out of my skin, it's not a bad place to land.

Maybe you should have done your research first on movie theaters and other things...

Nice to go down to Mead with the kids and go boating, or take them to Valley of Fire, or out to Red Rock teach them to rock climb. Mt Charleston is a fine place to hike or ski. Death Valley is not far away. While Vegas may not be on my hit parade, there is a ton of cool stuff to do nearby.

Actually hiking up Lone Mountain can be done by kids of 6 or 7. Fantastic experience. One of the great views of the valley and yet reasonably free of any real danger. Or you can go out there at dawn on a summer weekend and watch the baloons go up.

Or wander over to the discovery area in that park and see all the interesting stuff. And that is five minutes off the 215. And a first class play area for those too young for the more exciting stuff.

I just moved to Las Vegas last year from Northern California. I love it, seems like we get more visitors here since we moved here. The weather is awesome (if you like hot weather). The winters are not bad, the sun is out almost everyday. I live in Southwest Las Vegas, its growing real fast here, so much opportunity. Perhaps, if he and other boys got to see completely unclad women and men on a regular basis America would not have the bizarre "cookie stolen from the cookie jar" syndrome and the 200 billion dollar porn industry would shrivel up.

Just a thought.
Okay, first of all, I am so sick of this condescending, self-righteous "You silly Americans" attitude!

I am not naive, but I will not allow my kids to see naked people. I work very hard to teach them modesty and to think that the porn industry would shrivel up and die if nudity were more accessible is absolutely ludicrous. Because of the Internet, the only way nudity would be more accessible is if we suddenly allowed people to parade around naked in public! And the adult entertainment industry grows and grows!
I like Vegas, love to visit and have fun, but will not raise my kids there. Even if I somehow managed to keep them inside a safe suburban zone and raised them right, the Strip is only one "night out with friends" away. When they turn 21, I cannot stop them, but until then, I can make sure I can raise them right without playing tug of war with the lure of Vegas lights.
That's my two cents
