we've had 2 officer involved shootings lately, which is pretty darn rare for us.

october 8th
deputies responded to a report of a suicidial man. the man was a felon, in posession of 2 firearms. while negotiating with the cops, the felon held a handgun to his head. all the while telling the cops to shoot him. after several hours, the felon points his gun at deputies. they fired & killed the man. the deputy who shot the felon was placed on admin leave & while i can't find the article online, just this week in the printed edition of the newspaper, the deputy has been cleared of all charges & is back on duty.

october 31st
deputies responded to a report of a suicidial man. man was an ex-firefighter (local) & known to the cops/emergency responders. the man pointed a gun at his head while begging the cops to shoot him. at one point he pointed his gun at deputies. they fired & injured the man. the shooter was our sheriff, who while technically cannot be placed on admin leave, he did take time off & completed the necessary mental health evaluation. he has returned to work. the ex-firefighter survived the shooting & faces a long long road to recovery.

it's almost thanksgiving weekend, do you know what that means???? it's pow-wow time!! the weekend before turkey day is always a good time to come out & check out the dancers/food/vendors

this is a free event to attend. the vendors have some amazing things to sell such as kachina dolls, knives, christmas ornaments, jewlery, pottery & don't forget the food! the costumes the dancers wear are amazing to see in motion.

before i moved to town, i had stopped in to check out the town & stumbled on the pow-wow. it was my 1st introduction to this amazing small town & i try my best to attend it every single year.

chipotle is almost ready!! some of the signs are on the outside are up, some of the signs on the inside are up & the road in front of the building is under construction. i'm guessing by christmas it will be ready. i peeked in the windows & most of the kitchen is together, the menu board is up, there are absolutely no signage on the windows (no operating hours, no weapons, no shirt/no shoes, etc). the landscape has been planted. i've seen the lights on in the kitchen a few nights after hours so i'm guessing they are doing some sort of training/installation. i haven't seen "now hiring" ads yet.

Default I won't put anything here that is not fact in my experience about area.

Feb. 22, 2024

Pahrump, Nye County:

I am a 58 yo old male married almost 12 years.

People:

You will be treaded nice by nice people, I have met some of them.
You will be treated poorly if you do not meet social standards of specific locations or employees of certain organizations this is after talking with multiple people and my own experience that have lived here for years as for back as the early 80's and a wide age range from teens to seniors.

Restaurant's:

Restaurant's are typical for small town many fast foods, very few restaurant's with specialized dining like seafood, Italian, BBQ etc. There are 8+ restaurant's of one type food type and after talking with mangers and/or owners their food is purchased from the same supplier making the only difference the cleanliness, food prep quality, price and service. There is one or two that are better than the rest. I was taken to some of the best places by very sweet 95 yo. lady.

Internet:

I you need fast Internet, fiber is coming to where Electric Co. is providing, check your area.
If your are living in a that is not currently a wired ISP (Internet Service Provider). Your only choice is a dish or satellite, or cell service. I am currently on dish and have very frequent outages, like daily, sometimes all day with out service. I have had Internet service in 3 other cities for the same price here avg. Dish: $70 you get less Data, 50 Mbps (premium conditions) other cities 100+ Mbps for same price

Area:

The Pahrump area soil if walked or driven on is like a very fine powder (what most Pahrumpians call poof dirt). When wet it is a slushy, sticky, sinking into mess. I've put down 4-6 inches of type 2 rock very solid when dry but when ground is saturated you will sink into it especially vehicles. This effects homes that are built here which can effect resale, and manufactured homes which are a nightmare in itself.

Homes:

I would recommend living somewhere else due to the very bad construction of homes here, and if your thinking of buying a manufactured home, manufactured homes are a side job for construction here. Please do your extensive research on this or you will be in for the long haul of a nightmare. I'm talking months to years of complaints, delays, poor work, flooded home, water leaks, air duct leaks, electrical issues, squeaky floors, cracked walls, loose walls, loose items in walls, garbage under vinyl and carpet, staples, sticking through carpet, something sticking up through wood floor, floors not stapled or glued properly the list goes on and no repairs at all. There are only unreliable contractors and one installer of Manufactured homes in Pahrump from a major sales co. u can't miss them.

I won't put cherries on top the reality of living in Pahrump. Scale of 1-10 for living here, I give it a 5, buying or building home here, I give it a 1. If you don't believe me move here.
I will be moving from Pahrump as soon as I get repairs and my upgrades done.

Suggestion: I lived in Washoe County 15 years, 7 miles N. of Reno Nv. great place to live. I moved because I don't like what Washoe County is going to become. Home prices around 480K and Winters cold and snowy, Spring, Summer and Fall great. just look here on citi-data.

Below info might shred some light why Pahrump acts like Pahrump now.

Kayakers paddle in Death Valley after rains replenish lake in one of Earth’s driest spots

https://apnews.com/article/death-val...5efc4c2583b6ff

FEMA Flood Map Service Center: Search By Address

https://msc.fema.gov/portal/search?A...C%20NV%2089061

I am no expert on this matter. My speculation is that Pahrump is similar to Death Valley. When rain, all water flows to the lowest point of the valley and deposit powder like earth there.

Imagine if rain a lot????? Like Death Valley Lake vs Pahrump Lake???

FEMA Flood Map Service web link is a good tool to verify a house is in a flood zone or not.

I have been starting with www.riskfactor.com....you can get a 1-10 score on flood, fire, wind, and heat..but lately they have been pushing premium services for anything more. The free maps seem to be much better at FEMA,...

I mainly stick to myself so I don't get out to meet lot of people but I can say the ones I have interacted with, mainly common interest types, have been pretty friendly. Just in passing at the stores and such in town have all been cordial. I really don't have a lot of complaints about the people here other than the influx from Vegas, CA and other areas who move here and don't quite understand the small town pace. Yes, Pahrump is still a small town.

Restaurants essentially suck. I have yet to find one that I get excited about going out to eat at. For the most part they are passable, in you probably won't die if you eat the food. If you like American cafe/fast food fare you are in luck.Thankfully we go to LV a couple of times a month so we can get our eating out fix taken care of.

Internet is fair. Fiber is being put in throughout Pahrump but it may still be years off in some areas. %G internet is OK if you are near a tower. The best here, and other places, is Starlink. If you want fast internet you will pay for it. I use T-Mobile 5G and get anywhere from 25 to 100 mbs down, it just depends on the day, it is kind of bi-polar.

Soil is different in different areas. The area of "poof" dirt is pretty well defined. It has been known for decades so there is a fair sized area with no houses near the center of town off of 160. Some people bought there and got royally screwed because of either people not knowing or not disclosing prior to building. At least it isn't like a couple of areas in LV (Including a Beazer development) that they knew about and still built on. I am built on top of a caliche type area. If I want to put anything in my yard like lights or anything that needs to be placed in a hole I have to use a drill and a long masonry bit to break it up enough to get through it. I have no issues with flooding or mud, but I do live in a development.

My house is built alright although I have heard a lot of not so good things on some construction. I guess it falls under you get what you pay for and if building from scratch and are in the area, checking on your construction every few days will go a long ways toward quality. I have no experience with manufactured homes so I can't speak to that. They just never seemed like a good idea to me.

I like Pahrump, it has a rural feel but is growing out of that rapidly. It is 45 (Drs/Dentists) minutes to 90 (Nellis AFB) minutes to wherever I need to go in Las Vegas. If you want a dynamic social scene it isn't here. It has and is a retirement community although that is slowly changing into a bedroom community for Las Vegas. Once they opened up a 4 lane road to LV from Pahrump we started getting people looking for more affordable housing out here. Some found it, some didn't. I also have kids and a grand kid in Las Vegas so this is close enough to see each other when wanted but far enough away to stop them from just dropping in.

If I had my way I would have been living in South Dakota and snow birding in the winter but I was not alone and as every one knows, happy wife, happy life.

I think that no matter where you go there will be pluses and minuses, you just need to investigate and weigh your needs against what the place offers and go from there. You can never do too much research.
