I think I agree with most of the folks here. First, congrats on the job; and second- I would just talk to the women you would be renting from (in person) about getting the deposit back. If she says no to just outright offering a refund see if she would be willing to refund it if she finds another renter for that time period (and you could perhaps advertise that time slot on Craigslist, etc- to move it along). Usually the purpose of a deposit on a rental home is to ensure the person renting is not left with a vacant property during a time when someone else would/could have rented it but they already listed it as reserved (so its fair for them to keep it since they did lose out on the full rental) however with that in mind usually if they can find someone to replace you (which means they don't lose out) they will be ok with a refund since everybody wins!
Wow, that is tough! First of all I would do as the others suggested and find out the terms of your rental. Second I do think your family would/should understand about paying down your debt as much as possible.
I love the ideas from Country ~ maybe putting the deposit towards next year's trip, if possible, and also, the idea that you might get discounts on flights to visit the rest of the family in the future!
Even though everyone mentioned that your immediate financial situation comes first, I know how it is when you want to visit other family members (grandchildren). Even though airline prices are increasing all the time, it still would most likely be feasible to plan a long weekend to be with kids/grandkids. A long weekend really works wonders. In my opinion, seeing grandchildren is a big thing ~ worth sacrificing other things if necessary. Good luck! Seems like good things are coming your way.
Thank you thank you thank you -- now for the details :)
I was told today that yes indeed they have a choice of 3 more dates AFTER my vacation and I can sign up for any of them once my medical comes back clear.
I heard from the woman and she didn't mention anything about her cottage being flooded Buck, so hope that's good news ?
I do love your idea Country that was an awesome idea, but LUCKILY it appears I won't have to take that route. So it appears I will be going to NH in 6 weeks and then return to become a new American Airlines reservations representative (barring any complications - which I can't think of any).
The last step is finding a babysitter that isn't going to take more than 50% of my paycheck each week with Uncle Sam and the State of NC
Thanks again everyone - it was nice to have someone to ask for a fresh perspective.

I am so happy that everything seems to be working out-that is just great news.
I'm glad that it will be working out for you after all, possibly it's happening exactly as it is meant to be -- I'm a big believer in that! It's great that you'll be able to keep the original plan, and you'll be rested and refreshed and ready to get to work when you get back
I wanted to mention that while there were some great ideas out there for options for you in finding someone to take your place, that would usually need to be approved of by the owner of the cottage... If they only had your name down for the rental and there were any damages (especially if you went with a craigslist posting) you may be held liable. It's no longer an issue, but just wanted to mention that to you
So now you can start counting down the days!!! Oh, and congratulations on getting that job--maybe you can start flying to NH for a reduced price as an employee??
