NH's rate is 81.1% which is second only to VT's 82.3% in New England. MA is 79.5%. Suprisingly, NY is an abysmal 67.4% and CA is 69.2%. NV appears to be the worse state at 55.8%.
Yes, NH's #'s are good compared to the rest of the country, but for MSNBC to be posting this data in April 2009 stating that the #'s are from 2005 which are the most recent figures available is laziness on their part.
For us NH folks who are interested in detailed data within our own state, the NH DOE has figures available on line which were updated in March of this year with figures for the 2006-2007 academic year at all high schools. This is real data: http://www.ed.state.nh.us/education/...dGraduates.htm
Unfortunately, The % rates on that MSNBC map are comparing apples to oranges because so many of the states use different methods to come up with the drop out percentage.
Not surprised that the state I grew up in (NJ) has one of the highest rates, for as much as people make fun of the place it doesn't surprise me at all...I received an education that was nothing short of spectacular (as in, so good that lessons I learned in high school enabled me to ace classes in grad school...and rock the start of my career).
...another reason we chose to live in NH is the good schools- Hollis in particular. Even if we don't have kids- I'd rather my taxes support good/well run schools than so-so ones.

Does anyone else find it sad that the best graduation rate is 82%?
Graduating high school is about as difficult as washing your car and yet 20% of kids can't accomplish it. The good thing is the Messiah is going to lower the standards so that 82% goes up.

I agree. The blame for this can only go to the parents. Not valuing an education is a serious disservice to one's kids...
Agreed...and look at the comparison to other states...there are even lower.
I get that "back in the day" plenty of folks didn't graduate highschool and went on to trades; but today there are high school programs that are designed for these students and give them real training/experience in various skilled trades; there really is no excuse for this.
That said, I definately know a guy who left college with ONE semester left because "college was stupid"...and is planning on telling his kid "not to waste his time". Which would be fine if he actually was an electrician/mechanic/plumber or had some useful skill...but no...he has a BS job and is miserable.
