I remember visiting my bff when she lived near Orlando once a few weeks before Christmas, and they had a cold snap, maybe 40 or so at night...the news people were interviewing shoppers who were out as if they were pioneers for braving the cold and shopping anyway!

I have to second (third?) the Collingswood festivities, they are probably the best in the area.

It starts off on Friday night (Black Friday) with a ceremony to light the town Christmas tree and welcome Santa. There's a big group sing-a-long as well as other performances. They give out free coffee and hot chocolate and the past couple years they actually had snow makers, so it was snowing for the event. It caps off with everyone singing "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" and then Santa appears on the roof of the Borough Hall and the fire department raises the ladder truck and he climbs down and makes his way through the crowd.

Then Saturday morning they have the big parade on Haddon Ave. It is simply one of the best small town parades I have ever seen (and I've seen/been in a lot as my family and I were in the Mummer's for many years). The parade lasts about an hour plus and features all kinds of different bands, dance groups, mascots, fire trucks, etc. The end of the parade is Santa riding on a decked out fire truck complete with Santa throne.

If you have little kids or just enjoy the holidays, this is the place to be to kick it off and get in the spirit.

My mom is taking my daughters this year. My wife and I are going to my sons hockey game. I'm actually kind of upset that they scheduled a game this weekend, but that's hockey.

Now that it's supposed to rain Thursday and Friday, do these things get canceled or do they do them anyway?

I'm not 100% sure. I imagine that if it's really pouring than it will be cancelled, but while they can easily reschedule the tree lighting for another weekend, rescheduling that parade would be next to impossible do to all the various groups and bands involved. So, my guess would be that the tree lighting may get cancelled do to weather, but the parade will probably be a go.

BTW...pay attention and look for the Camden High Marching Band, you really can't miss them. They've played in the parade the past few years and are an absolute blast to watch. I usually make fun of marching bands (despite the Mummer's heritage...but that's different, lol), but these guys are spectacular. I think they even played in Obama's inaugural parade.
