If somebody wants to visit NYC and stay in NJ, then the only places I'd recommend for a hotel are in Hoboken or Jersey City. You're extremely close to Manhattan, you can SEE the NYC skyline, and you are still in fairly lively cities, with amenities and walkability.
I have no idea why anybody who is coming to the area for vacation would be interested in staying in a hotel in Lyndhurst, in the middle of the barren swamps near Medieval Times. That sounds really depressing.
I agree it does sound a little depressing but I used to live on the 163 bus line and droves of people everyday would be lined up outside the Marriot and Hampton Inn in East Rutherford taking the bus in to the city. You can save a good deal of money, it only takes 30 minutes MAX to get into the city and the rooms are bigger.
I would probably opt for a worse/cheaper hotel in the city if that was at all possible. I just wouldn't want to have to do the travel every day. And possibly multiple times a day.
TDstyles, that sounds better than the other cheap option, which is the EWR airport hotels. IDK if there are any direct buses from there - seems like you'd have to take a hotel shuttle to the terminal, then airtrain and then NJ Transit to the city.
If you look at published prices and then priceline winning bids on the betterbidding forums, you'll see roughly a trend of
~$45: EWR airport 3* hotels (Fairfield by Marriott, etc)
<$85: Doubletree and similar 3.5* in JC
<$120: Hyatt Regency (4*) in JC
There are chain hotels in JC at least 10 , the op can find a cheaper priced hotel there. All them are within 500ft of the Newport of Hoboken PATH stations....
There is a hotel, I think either in Secaucus or E Rutherford where its next to the Convention Center then a lot of stores, restaurants, etc. But the reason I suggest that is there is a bus from there right into NYC.
^ Buses are slow and all it takes is one accident in the Tunnel whole trip will take hrs , unlike if ur JC you have a few options if one fails.
Agreed but I took that bus every day for 2 years and traffic was rarely an issue. In over 1040 trips on that bus it never took more than 1 hour from those hotels to Port Authority and 90% of the time it took 25 minutes. Not to mention we are not reinventing the wheel here. more than half the business those hotels in ER get is from NYC tourists taking the bus into the city.

i think you're correct, but JC holds the edge because there are more options, plus stuff to do in JC. in the area you're talking about - it's a place to sleep, and a 30 minute busride if all goes well. in JC, it's a place to sleep, a 15 minute train, and has it's own stuff to grab drinks, eat dinner, visit...
There are also other boroughs of NYC, which many budget minded tourists find acceptable. For example the Country Inn and Suites in Long Island City often has acceptable prices, great reviews on trip advisor and is service 24 hours a day by the NYC mass transit.
