That doesn't sound right. Red Bank would not be described as the middle of nowhere. It's got a a pretty dense downtown that's crowded enough that it's difficult to find parking most evenings. The theater next to a funeral home sounds familiar, though.

After living in NJ and moving to ATL 3 years ago, I agree, people here do eat out more. Chain and fast food restaurants are always very busy. People here also eat a lot of candy and drink a lot of soda.

I grew up in Union Beach and as far as I can remember Red Bank was never in the middle of nowhere and was in Central NJ despite whay another poster may have thought.

Alot of people around here that are of European , Asian or South American descent cook at home and rarely eat out. The Weekdays you see more people at restaurants and bars and on the weekends it will be ghost towns but this depends on the town or city. Cities tend to be busier then towns on the weekends and half empty on the weekdays... And most New Jerseyites do get a decent amount of exercise. We also have more mom and pop and non fast food places then fast food places , so people here get healthier foods when eating out.

As a matter of fact, I ate at my favorite place, Sallie Tee's in Monmouth County, the Thursday just before Irene got here and destroyed it. They are going to gut it and reopen, though it will take months.

I don't know about Georgia, but when I used to go to Florida a lot to visit family, people went out to eat all the time simply because it was so cheap. Perhaps that's the difference. I eat cheaply at home most of the time so that I can go out to dinner at a restaurant from time to time without going broke.
I had no clue how hard Sallie Tee's was hit. That was one of my favorite restaurants (although not being from the immediate area it was a little hard to find...had heard that it was sold and being renovated). I was just at Barnacle Bills in Rumson for lunch on Friday and they had a good size lunch crowd.

In my area of Central Jersey I have noticed not as many people eating out for dinner (but have noticed more people eating out for lunch). I believe it is mostly because of the economy. Chain restaurants are most likely not hit as hard as restaurants which have had to raise prices with rising costs. The more mom and pop places have become more of a special occasion thing.

There is a Five Guys and Baja Fresh on Route 66 in Neptune/Ocean/Asbury border. I have tried both and they are good. I prefer Chipotle over Baja Fresh though.

I did not know that Five Guys in Shrewsbury was a Baja Fresh, I remember it being a Friendly's though.

Oh god. Now I have to go over there today for a Long Island Iced Tea. Best on the east coast!

You must have never been through Collingswood NJ. South Jersey has a bustling restaurant scene.

Sal, the guy who originally owned Sallie Tee's, died of cancer a few months ago. Someone else bought the restaurant and renovated parts of it not long ago. I know they redid the kitchen. One of the chefs is my neighbor. It took in a lot of water from Irene and they have to gut the interior.
