I have to agree with the sentiment that NJ has way too many little municipalities, and thus too much government.
I was going to make a point about NJ being the #1 most densely populated state in the nation, and that that should be taken into consideration...
HOWEVER, I don't know how much merit that point would have. Total square footage of land to be maintained counts for a lot too, and NJ is one of the smallest states in the nation.
NJ and Massachusetts rank very closely with each other when it comes to population density and square miles of land.
While Massachusetts only has 14 counties and 351 municipalities, NJ has 21 counties and 566 municipalities.
Jersey City & the rest of Hudson Co feel more alike than JC & NWK.
Newark, East Orange, Orange, Irvington........................ That should be the Essex Co consolidation.

Newark and Irvington probably should merge, and maybe the oranges should merge. But J.C. and Newark definitely should NOT merge. They have different identities and are not exactly close or well linked (IMO) I could see the logic in turning Hudson County into one city, but not Jersey City and Newark

Somehow I don't think incorporating Jerseyopolis would magically make the area desirable. In fact, I suspect it'd just be an incoherent and ungovernable mess, with all the money funneled to whichever part of the city happened to hold the mayor's office and/or city council.

I did it for 4 1/2 years, then finally decided it made sense to just live here as well. Very wise decision it was!

No , there all on different levels , all of Hudson County is a good idea. The Oranges , Newark - Irvington , Passaic - Paterson - Hawthorne , Belleview - Nutley , and Linden - Rahway.
I think having a large city population-wise (500,000+) would benefit New Jersey's reputation. My reason is this: when my friends and I down here (in Maryland) get into faux-arguments about which of our states is better, once I thoroughly demolish them, they always bring out the "whatever, you don't even have any real cities" remark*. Granted, Baltimore isn't exactly the safest, greatest city, but it is still an immense point of pride for many Marylanders. New Jersey doesn't have any city which fills that role, at least in my opinion.
A combined city would, rather than diminishing the former municipalities' identities, probably highlight them as notable attractions that make the combined city such a great place. For example, everyone has heard of Greenwich Village in Manhattan, or U Street in DC, but Hoboken isn't really that well-known at all outside the greater NJ area. Being part of Jersey City would really put Hoboken on the map as an unique neighborhood.
*Or even worse, "stop leaching off other states' cities", to which I then have to give a complex answer which I prefer not to. But that's a topic for another thread.
