(2) The PATH website says 20 minutes to get from Harrison to WTC, and 40 minutes to change trains in JS and get to 33rd street. Can you confirm?

(3) If your actual goal is Times Square, would it be quicker to take the PATH into WTC, change to E train, and go to Port Authority/Times Square underground walkway. I can't tell how much time it takes to negotiate the temporary station at WTC. It may be easier to change in Journal Square and walk the distance from Herald Square to Times Square.
1. Yes.

2. I'd go by what the PATH schedule tells you, but it sounds about right. It IS 20 minutes from Harrison to WTC, though, I can confirm that.

3. That's what I would do. It doesn't take long to get out of the WTC station, pretty much the same as pre-911 except you aren't coming up to the inside of a building complex. The difference is that you used to just walk through the Concourse to the E Train and now you have to go outside and walk a block or two further.

1. Yes. The transfers encompass the regular fare so essentially you are getting the most bang for your buck by riding the PATH longer.

2. It's definitely not 40 minutes with the transfer unless there is a delay. I'd say at the max 35 minutes, but generally 30-35.

3. I'm not sure how much shorter it is to go to WTC. It depends on how you pick up with E outside WTC. Let's just say that the PATH doesn't let off in the same station that the E is. You'd have to leave the PATH station, walk to the subway and pay a seperate fare.

I take the PATH train daily from Harrison to WTC and I love it. 20 minutes into downtown NYC. Also, Harrison even though close to Newark is a pretty safe area in my experience so far. I usually walk back from the station to my apartment which is a good 10-12 min. walk but never felt unsafe.
