North of Journal Square is quite good like the square surrounded by JFK, Pavonia, Newark, and Summit is one of the nicer areas. West of JSQ is quite good as well, (see streets within the area of Garrison, north of Stuyvesant, south of Pavonia. Esp in the dead end zones like Pavonia, Magnolia east of Tonnelle are very quiet).

If you are willing to go further South to McGinley Square area, all of JFK is quite nice, Glenwood and Fairview have affordable apartment buildings and are tree-lined and quiet.

2 of us need to go to NYU Poly at brooklyn Metrotech center everyday and 2 of us to New Jersey Institute of Technology, Martin Luther King boulevard, Newark, NJ 07102.

So we were confused between Harrison, NJ and journal square in jersey city.
Planing to stay in a 2/3 bedroom / 2ba apartment or house.

I think the students going to NYU Poly need to catch 2 trains (PATH) irrespective of Harrison or Journal Square.

But students going to NJIT, need to catch a train to Newark Penn Station and then walk abt a mile or take a bus to NJIT from there, if they live in Journal Square.

If they live in Harrison, NJIT is again abt 1 mile from there. So they can walk or take a bus from harrison.

So this is the scenario.

Now could anyone please suggest which is a better place to stay in terms of the following parameters.

1. Safety
2. Nice Pleasant Place
3. Grocery stores access ( Indian)
4. Access to Restaurants (Indian, European, Italian,Chinese, etc)
5.Nice environment
6.Affordability (If the cost of living difference between the 2 places is high)

SO, based on all the above parameters, which is the best place for us to live ???
This may be a bit far afield for the NY Poly students, but Edison might be a good fit. There is a large Indian expat community with many of the amenities you mentioned. There is frequent train service to Newark Penn station and NY Penn Station. At Newark Penn, it is 3 quick stops on the light rail to NJIT; there may also be shuttle buses that the school runs.

Edison is too far.

Journal Square may be your best bet since two of you are going to NY Poly. It's a good halfway point and there are plenty more restaurants and convenience stores in the area. You could be a 10-min walk from both NJIT and the Harrison PATH station if you live in Harrison, but then your NY Poly friends would have an extra 10 minute ride on the PATH to get to the JSQ transfer station. While Harrison is safer, there's a far better mix of restaurants & stores/shops in Journal Square.

I have to vote for Harrison. While Journal Square may not be super dangerous I always feel like you owe it to yourself to live in a neighborhood that you can actually walk around at all time of the day and not for nothing Harrison is up in coming and is expanding by the minute. You have plenty of food options and then you are always within walking distance to Ironbound which expands your overall experiences that much more. My vote is easy Harrison.

FYI: If you decided on moving to Harrison, NJIT is a very short trip from the Harrison PATH station. It's 1 stop away from Newark Penn Station where you can stay underground and take the light rail to the Warren St/NJIT station.
