Further, most of the people who scream about NJ on this thread and talk about moving are all about "we". There is only I. It's a lot different going on a grand adventure of moving somewhere completely strange when you have a partner with whom to share the adventure. It's also much easier meeting people in a new place when you are part of a couple.
Someday I might decide to go, but for now, family and my overall life overrule the desire to save a few bucks by moving somewhere distant and strange for no other reason than "it's cheaper".
I would say the housing here in NJ (and possibly some other states too) is like a big Ponzi scheme. You get suckered into this huge property tax thing and then hope that when the time comes to sell there would be a buyer willing to take it off your hands at a even higher price
In some Bergen county towns, around $2,000 a month for apprx 2,500 sq ft house. Think about it. Around $24,000 a year.
Who would like to retire here with that kind of monthly outgo? Very few people, probably either the very rich or people who don't have a choice.
Which reminds me, what happened to Governor Christie's plan of equal aid to every public school student in NJ ?

Suckered in by who? It's not like the only choices are places with $24,000 property taxes.

I am saying in general in NJ. It does not matter whether it is $12,000 or $24,000. The middle class in NJ are all suckers in this game here for the kind of SFH we live in and the amount of taxes we pay for that.
My town (Cranford) hasn't gotten the memo that we're all suckered in because houses are selling before they even hit the market and if they do, within days. I have friends who grew up here who can't find a house in their own town because people moving from elsewhere (like NYC) are snatching them up.

That's what I am saying. We only hope that when the time comes to sell somebody is there to buy it from us and they better be well off because the property taxes can be killing. That is we hope there is another bigger sucker than us.

so if you pay rent, or pay a mortgage/prop. tax, you're going to do it -- no suckage involved
