^^^ Good point. Let them eat cake. Hell, when NYC was a slum thirty years ago, they were fools to redevelop the Village, Hell's Kitchen, East Village, Chelsea, SoHo, etc. Now they're doing the same thing in Harlem! It won't work!!!!
Please … You’re conveniently forgetting that it was Mayor Guliani and his QOL laws that did more for the redevelopment in NYC than any new construction. He threw every scumbag in jail and that more than anything let to NYC’s resurgence. I didn’t always agree with his tactics, but it worked … and it’s something both James and Booker don’t have the stones to try.
And, again, Mayor Bollwage led the construction of Ikea and Jersey Gardens in the late 1990’s and Elizabeth has gone down the toilet ever since. Inner-city Elizabeth hasn’t seen dollar one from those profits and it’s decaying, just like Newark. So don’t tell me that new construction automatically leads to a better city. Cause it takes a hell of a lot more than that.
Well if you took the time to read responses I returned the favor. I hope you do not subject yourself to living in a community that does not help itself. But you sound like that type of person. Good luck in the Ghetto!
That's not very nice. Rather cold. I'm surprised at your comment. If it's a personal attack then keep it personal, but my mom lived in Newark and she was in a community and she helped herself plenty - so who you're referring to or what "community" you're refering to . .. I don't know.

Well When Im that I was "PWNED" it strikes me as someone who is uneducated and not the type to help themself. It was personal .. No offense to anyone else.

Thanks! Maybe you'll listen to yourself before posting comments, use that square thing on the right called the DELETE button if you think what you wrote is nonsensical, and then not get PWNED so often!
Okay, people, okay. Let's get back at hand. The fact of the matter is this: Just because one person caught a beatdown in Newark, doesn't mean the whole city is going to hell in a handbasket. Living in NYC, I know people who were mugged in nabes in which people would consider "safe" ( like the Village or the UWS). People need to realize that crime is everywhere. From the biggest of cities, to the smallest if towns, we will never live in a crime free zone. Even the OP said that there were things he/she could of done to prevent this attack (like calling for a cab). I for one would never walk around parts of Newark or even parts of NYC at night, because I know the odds of becoming a victim of crime increases. I'm not blaming the victim; rather, I'm telling everyone to be smart when traveling alone.
As for the people who said "Rudy cleaned up NY!" Get real. Yeah, Rudy flew around New York with a giant "S" on his chest, and kicked all the homeless and druggies out of the city. If you believe that, I got a wonderful new stadium in Queens, I want to sell you.
As for nabes only get cleaned up because "people want it that way" I got this to say: Ask Donald Trump what people in SoHo, thinks of his new tower. There were plenty of community protest when nabes started to change in the 80's and 90's. The reason why people in Harlem are upset over community development is because many small stores that are a fixture in that area, are going to be forced to close. Also, lets not forget that the cost of living will dramatically jump.

the thing you are missing is that this tale is NOT atypical, it is the norm in newark
