I was attracted to Journal Square when I moved here because the rents were lower, but they are lower for a reason. Rents for a studio or one bedroom off the Grove St stop in JC were only around 100-200 more a month. If it is in your budget, Id spend the extra money so you can feel safe and enjoy the area you live in. Now that I am settled in, I am really glad I did not rent a place in Journal Square. Everytime I have to go there I get a depressed feeling. However, if you are a busy person who spends most of your time in the city, then it might not matter to you. Take the train over one night and walk around to get a feel for it. You will know in your gut if its right for you or not.
