I am new to New Jersey. I was going to try and plan a trip down the jersey shore for tomorrow. I live in Rahway and haven't been anywhere in southern jersey yet. Where is good to go and what is the best time to leave? I assume traffic will be pretty horrendous most of the day. Any tips would be awesome!
You don't have to gp very far south to experience the Jersey Shore. Long Branch isn't very far and is pretty nice. Ocean Grove is another beach town that's pretty unique. Leave Rahway as early in the day as you can, maybe right after the AM commuter hours if you're going during the week.
I think the op is going down tomorrow (Sat). To be fair, the earlier the better. I know that sounds obvious but if you wait until even say, 8am...have fun sittin' on the parkway.
Ira made some good suggestions. You also can go to Sandy Hook (Just so you know...there is a nude beach there, )
Alison, it really depends what you're after at the jersey shore. Do you want a nice quiet beach to sit on and enjoy the sun and water or do you want a packed beach with nearby bars to grab drinks for happy hour in the afternoon, a nice boardwalk with games, shops etc? For a lively atmosphere check out Manasquan, Belmar, Pt. Pleasant. For a quite family time, Spring Lake, Avon, Ocean Grove.
All good advice so far although I'm not sure if you leave by 8am that you will hit traffic. I used to regularly leave at 8:30 on Saturdays and never hit traffic that early. Sandy Hook is close to you, probably about 35 mins but you do need to leave early on really hot days since it does close once the lots are full.
Pt. Pleasant, Seaside Heights and Wildwood all have boardwalks with rides and amusements. Pt. Pleasant is geared toward a very family friendly crowd.
Seaside Heights is a little further down the Parkway. It is a larger boardwalk. It is also family friendly but you get a lot more teens and partiers.
Wildwood I think is the biggest of the three (if I remember correctly). It is also the furthest away.
Eventually it will be fun to explore all of the places mentioned. So pick one for tomorrow and try somewhere else the next time...enjoy!
