Hi all, I live in Bergen County but don't use a car. A friend here needs new tires for her car ASAP and doesn't know where to go. She tried Richter but they're too expensive. Where should I send her to get cheap new automobile tires here?
her best bet is to go to tirerack.com and have the tires shipped to a designated installer in NJ so they don't have to ship the tires to her...
they have a warehouse in Delaware so it only takes 1 day to deliver the tires to NJ.. tirerack has tire reviews from people who have bought the tires so its a good way to get feedback on her choice of tires..
if she can't wait.. try pep boys in Hackensack on river road/court street.. they have their own brand of discount tires. i'd avoid sears as they ding you for every little item.. http://localstores.pepboys.com/hackensack/
Tire rack is not cheapest, nor recommended. Correct, shipping costs will add up. Also, if there are any problems with tires - it will be a headache to fix.
Best place in my opinion is Sams or BJs. Free mounting and lifetime balance..
I know about tight money but I'd like to point out that where the rubber meets the road there is a huge difference in safety factors with cheap as opposed to moderately priced tires. Cheap tires will have soft sidewalls making for more difficult handling. The car will sway a lot. Cheap tires will have to be replaced much sooner as well. They will also not grip the road as well as moderately priced tires.
If at all possible go with the most expensive brand name tire you can afford. Even on an old beater this will make a huge difference.
whether the tires are shipped to one's home, or to an installer, Tire Rack will still charge you shipping.
once that shipping cost is factored in, Tire Rack may no longer be the least expensive source...
What I found is even with shipping tirerack pretty much comes less for the sets of tires that I've ordered in the past. But true she can look at shipping and compare to make sure..

True. But if the current tires on the car are pretty much bald, new cheaper ones will still be an improvement. I was in a 7 car collission once as this car spun out on rain that wasn't that bad. But I agree buy the best tire they can afford and they can use the reviews on tirerack for comparison.
Ok, just got a quote on a set of tires for my SUV. 990 from Paramus Discount Tire. 990! Unreal. These guys are usually the best deal in North Jersey.
Tire Rack is good with the prices, but the stations that install want to charge me 30/each rim for mounting and balancing, and 10 dollars/each rim for metal valve stems, and 3 dollars each tire for a disposal fee. It negates any savings (total after install is 895 ).
try Bruno Tire in Union City -- they're a Tire Rack installer, depending on your wheels Mounting & Balancing will be $20 - $25 per...
Called them a little bit ago. 25 each for install, 5/each for metal stems. A little better, but still high. These aren't high performance tires, nor are they an unusual size (my old Benz ran me 1300 for a new set of rubber and I was lucky to get 10-15K out of them.
I wonder what gives with these prices. Sears is up next.
