Thought you would all enjoy this: today, one of our local grocery stores advertised thier sale items for the next 7 days: and yes, Hatch chilies are on sale, the price? only a 1.99 lb...

I just laughed, in fact I was laughing so hard, my husband wanted to know if the comics were that funny this morning?

I get them for .79 per pound in Tempe. $1.99 is crazy, but if I had to I would pay it. Love the Hatch!

Agree . . . I will pay whatever is asked. This week they were $1.29/lb. at HEB in Houston. They were offering them roasted at $1.00/lb. if you bought an entire bag. My freezer isn't that big, and they looked a little over-roasted.

That was the one thing that kept me sane in Houston... Central Market Hatch Chile Days! Have fun!

wow, that is better than we got the first week of the month in Belen. We paid .49 a lb but were glad to get them. We brought about 20 lbs home with us, in ice and only 2 or 3 spoiled. Pat roasted them, I packaged them and now we are set for winter. Last year here, one of our stores had them for .99 lb, we bought about 15 lbs and the guy had no idea what we would do with all of them. Long story, we were the second people that day to buy a box full and he thought we were all nuts.

Hey Nita, I know that this is gonna sound silly, and I really hope you all don't laugh to hard at me. But what is Hatch Chile. It sounds wonderful, but I don't think that I would be able to get them here. So can you explain them to me.
Thanks.

I'm not Nita, but because you're probably on tenterhooks awaitiing an answer:

Hatch, New Mexico enjoys the distinction of being the home of "The World's Best Chile Pepper", according to a report by the BBC World News. Hatch Chile is best prepared by roasting over an open flame. Each year during chile season, dozens of chile vendors can be found lining the streets of Hatch roasting the local chile.

The Hatch Chile Festival[3] is an annual event that occurs each Labor Day.[2] This event attracts people world wide to a place known as the chile capital of the world. The small town has accommodated up to 30,000 people for this event. This small farming community is known world wide for raising very good chile.
The farm fields along the Rio Grande are very fertile, the soil having been deposited and spread over a broad flat plain by changes in the course of the river over centuries. The fields are periodically irrigated by water allotments from the Rio Grande - flooding being the main mode of irrigation - sometimes supplemented by sprinkler systems if the farmer owns a deep well.

I made some chiles rellenos with the Hatch chiles I bought at the local HEB last night. I bought the ones labeled hot, and to my suprise, they were actually hot! The only thing better than the smell of fresh roasting chiles is eating them.
