I lived in Reno, NV and joined the Air Force and was stationed in Alamogordo before moving to Silver City when I got out of active duty and my husband took a job in Silver. My first impression was "OMG what a dump". Seriously. BUT, I gave it a chance. We rented a little dinky house for $585/month for about a year and a half. Found we loved eating at the Buckhorn Saloon in Pinos Altos even if it cost us $80 for dinner and drinks for 2. I took a job at the mine and work there to this day. I love my job and don't want to leave. I have made many friends here. Yes, there's a drug problem here but that is a problem EVERYWHERE. No place is free of it. Yes there are bums here that beg for money outside the Wal-Mart parking lot. Gas prices here are the same at EVERY station, which tells me there is something wrong. When one can buy gas in Southern California cheaper than here, yeah, something's wrong. I used to spend one weekend a month in Tucson for the Air National Guard and grew to really like Tucson, too. I love the mountains around here and how quick you can get up into them, but sadly, I'm with a lot of my friends saying that too much of the forest is being fenced off. Housing prices are outrageous. I live in the Tyrone townsite where houses once sold for $40000 and now there isn't one less than $130000. I bought mine last year for $115000 and it isn't the nicest or crummiest in the neighborhood. I love being less than 20 minutes from work. I like the seasons except for winter because I don't like the cold. The wind blows a lot in the spring and you think it will never warm up. The monsoon season starts in July and I always look forward to it because the rains keep the temps under 100 but you have to put up with the humidity.
Not much for restaurants although there are a lot. We always ate at Jalisco's for Mexican and Wrangler for American and don't have a favorite for Chinese. Others will give their opinions on restaurants. We've had good and bad service at them all. Shopping at Wal-Mart is a drag a lot of the time because the lack of checkers. People like to congregate in the aisles and catch up on the last 5 years with their neighbor but the prices are cheaper than Albertson's and Food Basket. There's one golf course and it is fairly decent. Spent many afternoons on it as my husband is a golfer. There's all kinds of people here but the majority are Hispanics and that never bothered me. There's cowboys and ranchers and college kids and hippies, retirees, gays, you name it. A lot of people who've lived here forever and a lot who are new. Lots of new custom homes popping up all over the place. Land isn't real cheap anymore. Sadly, we're moving. My husband is already gone and I will be following next month. We hope to rent out our house. I have a feeling that someday we will be back...if not WE, then it might just be ME! My biggest complaint are having to drive so far to an airport and shopping. I have no use for the one here. Shopping is either in Las Cruces/El Paso or Tucson. Often one can find better prices for anything in a larger city than here in town. |

Is that what these forum sites are like, inaccurate information?? I used to live there 15 years ago, or I passed through there once - these are the people giving life advice to others?? Please dont give advice unless you have detailed knowledge. I live in the Silver City area and the air quality is spectacular. The Tyrone mine has been in reclamation (no mining) for the past several years. Silver City is a beautiful area with a great population. If you want to find that small town feel like it used to be when you were a kid then Silver City is the place. The average home price is still under $200k and there are more police than you can shake a stick at, making a huge dent in the statewide DUI problem. I guess these sites are geared for "know-it-alls" who think they can give advise on almost every topic.

I assume from your name that you are a resident of the Mimbres Valley area. Just wondered if this is an area where retired people live? Any info you can give on the area would be helpful.
From what I can see , it looks to be about 25 miles or so from the valley to Silver City. Is the drive into town an easy one or difficult, especially in the winter. Also is the weather the same or different from Silver City. From what I can see about the valley area, it looks to be growing in population and services recently. Or is my info incorrect. Any comments you can give would be welcome. Thanks. |

Why wouldn't you expect gas in Southern California to be cheaper than in a place where the fuel is trucked in over thousands of miles and many miles via mountain roads? That's part of the charm of small town off-interstate living. |

Mimbres resident warned:
> Is that what these forum sites are like, inaccurate information?? Yes. Lots and lots. It's the job of the reader to sift throught know-nothing posts and posts by obvious experts and to use that information to do their own friggin' research. > I used to live there 15 years ago, or I passed through there once - these are the people giving life advice to others?? There's nothing wrong with doing that. > Please dont give advice unless you have detailed knowledge. Better idea: If someone posts something wrong then it's your job to post a correction and dress them up for posting innacurate information. If someone posts a question about what to do in a place and I went there once and had a good time doing [X] then I would darn sure feel free to post about it. |

I agree with Mortimer...If I tell folks my good memories of a place [x] years ago and then a number of folks post messages telling me how much the place has changed, then that provides a lot of good information for someone who is fact-finding.
Kinda like Edison finding 2,000 different ways NOT to make the filament of a light bulb...every failure helped lead him to success. |

Thank you 6 Foot 3,
Never occurred to me to Google for that information until I got your message. Apparently it is, indeed, now legal to carry a concealed weapon in NM. Not that I'm planning on shooting any , but another thought/question about Silver City please....Many boom box enthusiasts in SC, playing the constant drum beat-type "music" from their cars or homes? |
