There are 354 McDonalds in Manhattan, probably slightly fewer Burger Kings and at least 5,000 of everything else on your list. There aren't any hog dog places that I know of.
Come back to us when you find a neighborhood and have gained some kind of grasp on the city.

No offense intended, but your questions indicate no grasp on the vibrancy of nyc. It sounds like you are coming from a small town.
1) steak house? turn right or left and you'll find one.
2)Deli? turn right or left and you'll find one.
3)dvd and magazines? better off getting your dvd's online for $10 a month and magazines? ..turn right or left and you'll find one.
4)second hand book store? turn right or left and you'll find one.
5) area to stay out when renting in Manhattan? there aren't any. there are just good and better due to price of rentals all the rest are priced out to the outer boroughs.
6) good broker service? turn right or left and you'll find one.
7) good towncar service? you have to be kidding me! turn right or left and you'll find one.
8) where to go for movies? turn right or left and you'll find one.
9) good place to eat with good breakfast specials? turn right or left and you'll find one.
..... etc etc.
27) I find the subways safe at ALL hours.
as far as your license goes, NYS law requires you to change it within the first 30 days of living in NYC for the license to be valid. Regardless of whether you are driving or not, It establishes residency.
"Drivers From the US or Canada Who Move to NYS
NYS recognizes valid driver licenses held by residents of other US states, US territories and Federal districts and Canadian provinces. If you become a resident of NYS, you must apply for a NYS driver license not more than 30 days after you become a NYS resident."
NYS DMV - Driver License, Learner Permit and Non-Driver Photo ID Card (http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/license.htm - broken link)

you kind of get the Idea. The one that WAS serious I answered for you. As others here have posted before me; After you have been in NYC a couple of days and have a grasp of what the city IS and HAS would be a better time to ask your questions. I believe 25 of your 27 questions would probably be answered.

Pathmark here in LES is open 24/7.. I love the fact that when I stay down there I can get fresh milk at 3am or anything else I need. I think there is a hole-in-the-wall video/dvd shop in Essex & Rivington that is open 24/7. I am not to sure of anything above Houston St since thats not my forte.

the town i come from is less then 450 people total in the area in a area of less than 1/2.sized town with ranchs around us ..i live out on the Colorado and Utah border area

to get to my place in the back country where i live ..you turn off the main highway at this mile marker and drive down a dirt road that where go for a about 2.1/2.miles down the dirt road to the house ..if the dry it ok to drive when it rains or snows on the ground and it becomes a sea of mud when driveing on .

i get my mail at the local gas station as i come into town or if i have a package comes to the house it get droped at gas station and i pick it up in m way into town

we have at last count one gas station and small local mom and pop stop and rob and small local eating place as you drive into town

your mail comes out of Springdale area ..if you order anything over the internet the packages come Salt lake city or ST Georges to get to your house..

if a stange person or person car is in the area you know real quick about them ..we have the sheriff dept and highway partol as the basic law enforcement ..hospital in Springdale and it about a 30 to 80 mins ride from where iam at to how close you are to town ..if it that bad they will air lift you out ..

you have a wally-world-smith food and drug or walgreens or a couple of mom and pop places in town as you basic places for shopping ..

you drive into the larger town like Springdale or St Georges for supplies and shopping we shop for a month at a time most of the time or if on the way back from work you stop for something if you work in town or passing through town on the way home ..most people shop once a week or twice a month for food and other household supplies

we keep a basic supply of food per person for just in case moments or snowed in or other bad weather problems and can not get out of the house for a while ..

we have a mcdee-bugerking and subway and kfc and demiono pizza places to eat fast food ..if you want pizza you order it and drive in and get it if you live close enough..

plus the most common thing is you see a family do is buy a couple of diff types of fast food and take it home to eat later as a treat ..my deal is i hit kfc and subway and bugerking and pizza place and get a lot of the fast food after shopping when iam on the way home and take it home and enjoy it for a couple of days of cold pizza and kfc before starting in on the food i had bought for the two weeks time frame iam home for some down time and get the head clear and back on saight

plus a couple of placs that rent dvds are in town ..most of the people buy them and store them at the house for winter time

cell phone service is like before the mountain your ok and after passing the mountain then it can be get spotty at times..from what i have heard that the new cell phone tower is going up on the top of the mountain and you going to get better cell coverage in the area now ..

sat internet and tv are the most common ways people get internet and tv in the back country ..closer you are to town the better the chance of getting cable.. but where iam at the only option it sat internet or dail up .. that why people still have a land line in there homes for calling out in there homes in back country ..

going out it going over to Springdale for doing or a really big night is out to ST Georges for a night out at the movies and drinner

most people have pickup trucks with 4 wheel drive for getting in and out of the back country and driveing on the roads after the rains ..my driveway is a dirt path that turns to mud when wet ..so a 4 wheel drive truck is basic item for liveing in the back country .

everyone heats with propane and some of the places have solar panels for chargeing the back up battie banks when the power goes down and you have a few basic items in the storm and it aftermath

some people also have wood stoves for heat and cooking on if need .. my place does not need them for i have a another way of keeping warm when it winter time and the temps drop down in the winter time to some chilly numbers

every one has rifles and pistol in there homes and it normal ..we go target pratice out on the back yard and the people come over to see what new hunting rifle or shotgun that you have ..

the rule in the household we had the following rules about shooting off the back yard ..

1-lock the backdoor so no one could come out the door with adult leaning on the door so if did open they would feel it and look to see who comeing out and stop them ..

2-tell everyone in the house that is about to be gunfire

3-make sure the kids have there hearing protectors on in the house before letting off a round ..

4-kids where taught that firearms are not toys they are tools that we used around the ranch and self defense if need ..not a toy as my grandfather told me when i was out Elk hunting with him one time ..

most of the time the kids where at school when we would set up the range to sight in a rifle with scope and we where done when they got off the bus and home that day ..

we hunt and fish and it normal to us..we go hunting or fising before work or school ..we would get off in the fall or spring time to help with the cattle round up for the ranch

most of the kid went to the bus stop and if you miss the bus mom drove you into town for school..

It makes shopping easier and prices are usually cheeper than mom and pop...and stay open later, or 24 hrs, which is good for us workers.

so I will check the box yes, I like the big box stores.

Ugh...I grew up in an area where big boxes were the only options. I love the lack of them in NYC. It's nice having at least one city in the U.S. that isn't dominated by them. There for a while I was at the point where I was thinking I was gonna barf and never stop barfing if I drove past another block with a Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Taco Bell, McDonald's, Burger King, and TGI Friday's all in succession (oh yeah, and some generic 'Irish' bar where no Irish person had ever sat foot).

NYC is such a nice change...

Why so much hatred for big box stores?

They're definitely not pleasing on the eye, but they do provide a service mom and pop cannot match unfortunately. NYC has plenty of them as well as banks..it's no different than another city.
